Story Problems…Solved Unit Portfolio Presentation Roy Chamberlin

Unit Summary Learn to follow the clues and unravel the mysteries of solving story problems. You will learn the steps involved in setting up and successfully solving story problems.

Curriculum-Framing Questions Essential Question Can you unravel the mystery of real-life? Unit Questions What are the common characteristics in story problems? How can these similarities be used to create a general format for solving story problems?

Curriculum-Framing Questions Content Questions What is being asked in the question? How does the question help format/label the solution? What is the important data that is provided? Do I have enough data to solve the question? If not, what data is missing? What are the strategies that can be used? Which strategy/strategies best fit the data and problem type?

Curriculum-Framing Questions Content Questions (continued) What processes, equation or diagram will solve this specific story problem? Does my solution answer the original question? Does my solution have an appropriate label for answering the question? Does my solution seem appropriate for the data and question?

Story Problems Solved This project will help my students develop 21st century skills by: Collaborating with peers. Analyzing data, setting up and finding answers to unit questions Solving story problems and gaining confidence in their abilities to solve real-life problems. Learn the relevance of math in their lives. Using higher level thinking skills.

Gauging Student Needs Assessment Purpose of the Assessment To gather information about what students already know about solving story problems. What I want to learn from my students? I want to find out what they already know about the Unit Questions and what strategies they have learned/employed. How I have tried to promote higher-order thinking? I ask students to analyze data, use divergent thinking in considering possible solutions, convergent thinking in choosing the best strategies and logic in assessing the final solution. How the assessment information helps me and my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit? If students have misconceptions about how to solve story problems, I can provide a structure for dealing with future problems. If students have different levels of understanding about solving story problems, I can provide various strategies. We will revisit this data throughout the unit for students to increase their knowledge. What feedback or additional ideas I’d like? I would like help on my assessment. I think I need to elicit more higher-order thinking, but I’m not sure how.

My Goals for the Course Find ways to get my students more interested in and comfortable with story/real-life problems. Learn about different kinds of technology my students and I can use in dealing with story problems. Collaborate with other teachers about solving story problems.

Goals for My Students To learn how to interpret, set-up, solve and evaluate the solutions to story problems. To help them feel more comfortable and confident in their ability to solve multistep problems. To become more independent learners capable of working with others to solve real-life problems.

Request for Feedback How I can incorporate technologies to my project. Ideas for helping students take more responsibility for their own learning.
