America Enters the War H-SS 11.7.1- Examine the origins of American involvement in the war, with an emphasis on the events that precipitated the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Japan Attacks the U.S. Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941. The Japanese attacked the U.S. because of conflict over power in Asia and the Pacific Islands. Americans suffered heavily about 2,500 people died it was “A day that will live in infamy.”

America Declares War! After the attack on Pearl Harbor the U.S. declared war on Japan. Germany and Italy declared war on America along with Japan.

Mobilizing for War A spirit of patriotism grew throughout the U.S. During the course of war more than 16 million Americans served in the military. Americans from all ethnic and racial backgrounds joined the military to defend their country.

Japanese take over Philippines U.S. Army along with General Douglas MacArthur retreat from Manila to Bataan. American troops suffered living in half and quarter rations of military and medical supplies. American soldiers surrendered, the sick were forced to march 55 miles to the Bataan Peninsula, more than 7,000 American troops died during the trip which is known as the Bataan Death March.

America Strikes Back with Doolittle Raid The Doolittle Raid was planned to hit Japan at night but they were detected so Doolittle ordered the attack immediately. It killed 50 Japanese people and damaged 100 buildings. Then the Battle of Coral Sea gave an American victory, it forced the Japanese to call off attack on New Guinea.
