Importance of knowing prepositions Determining a sentences subject and verb is often important and sometimes tricky. Learning how to identify prepositions and prepositional phrases will help when looking for the subject of a sentence. Importance of knowing prepositions

What is a preposition? Think of a box What words can you use to describe a dog in relation to this box? There are more than 50 prepositions What is a preposition?

How many can we list?

Here are the 53 prepositions Beneath Beside Between Beyond But By Concerning Down During Except For From In Inside Into Like Near Of Off On Onto Out Outside Over Past Regarding Since Through Throughout To Toward Under Underneath Until Up Upon With Within Without About Above Across After Against Along Amid Among Around At Atop Before Behind Below Here are the 53 prepositions

Now we can figure out the prepositional phrase is, right? A prepositional phrase begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun. Ex: I am going to the store with my friend. Can you find the prepositional phrases in the sentence? How many are there? Now we can figure out the prepositional phrase is, right?

Using prepositional phrases to find the subject and verb of a sentence Prepositional phrases WILL NOT be the subject or verb in a sentence. How can we find the subject of the sentence? First get rid of all prepositional phrases EX: The man with his son walked toward me. You are left with the simple sentence: The man walked. The verb is: walked Who did the walking? The man The man is the subject and walked is the verb. Using prepositional phrases to find the subject and verb of a sentence

Let’s try some more: Some of the ducklings waddled past us. A book of stamps lay on the table. The mother held the baby in her arms by the door. With his flashlight the camper scared the bear away from the food. Practice: page 15 Easy Grammar Let’s try some more:

ALERT: Sometimes the object of the preposition (the noun) can be a compound object. Don’t let that throw you off. EX: Our dinner came from the pantry and freezer. from is the preposition the pantry and freezer is a compound object Therefore, from the pantry and freezer is the prepositional phrase. Be Careful!!! More practice on page page 21.

Absolutely, don’t forget to include the entire subject. EX: Outside the building, the cats and dogs played. The burglar and his helper walked toward me. The broken cup and saucer were under the table. For breakfast, cereal, pancakes, and toast were not served. NOTICE: NOT isn’t included in the verb phrase. If there can be compound objects of the preposition, can there be compound subjects?

Do we know our 23 helping verbs? We shall have a contest to see who knows their helping verbs. Each row has 3 minutes to list as many helping verbs as possible. The winning row will enjoy a jolly rancher! Ready, Set, GO!!! Practice on page 29 Compound objects of the preposition and compound subjects, what’s different about verbs?

EX: At night he wants (to leave) by bus. REMINDER ONE: What if you have a sentence that seems to have two verbs? EX: At night he wants (to leave) by bus. wants is the verb to leave is the infinitive verb, which is a verb in its basic form. Leaving and left would be “to leave” in other forms. Two other reminders.

EX: Put the scissors in the drawer. REMINDER TWO: Sometimes you have an imperative sentence, which seems to have no subject. EX: Put the scissors in the drawer. What is the subject and verb? Practice on page 39

Review Infinitives = verbs in basic form (to go) Verb phrase = has stopped Imperative = (You) that is understood in a sentence Compound objects of the preposition = from mom and dad Compound subjects = Doug and Kari live in New York Compound Verbs = Some walked and picked flowers Review
