He spent the equivalent of £250 per month on food and £10,000 on collars. Henry VII died a very rich man. Probably the crown was the richest it had ever been, but Henry VIII blew it all on a war with France, expensive clothing and hunting. Henry needed more money, but from where? The church. The church made money from collections made during services. Also people would buy indulgences, which were basically the church's forgiveness for sins someone has committed.

But this would cost. As there was no credit cards they had to pay in gold or else leave the church their land.
