Presentation transcript:

It is a complex sentence you good for nuthin’ bald excuse for a Grammar Boot Camp It is a complex sentence you good for nuthin’ bald excuse for a learned man!

Simple Sentence Has one complete subject and one complete predicate Has no subordinating conjunctions May have coordinating conjunctions but only to join 2 equal parts within the simple sentence May have a compound subject or a compound predicate

Examples: Ella hoped the weather would be sunny on the weekend. Fireworks make Victoria Day weekend more interesting. The Bengal tiger got seasick easily on the lifeboat. The ship sank.

Compound sentence Needs a coordinating conjunction! FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So) Sometimes, if the sentence is lengthy, you can use a comma before the conjunction BUT NEVER, and I mean NEVER!!! use a comma to connect two independent clauses! This is called a COMMA SPLICE.

Correct the following comma splice: Paul loves to travel, he visits Hungary at least once a year. Paul loves to travel; he visits Hungary at least once a year. OR Paul loves to travel and he visits Hungary at least once a year. OR, Paul loves to travel. He visits Hungary at least once a year.

COMPOUND sentences It is nearly half past five, and we cannot reach town before dark. It is nearly half past five, so we cannot reach town before dark. It is nearly half past five, for Big Ben has rung five times. It is isn’t time to give up, nor is it time to start all over. It is isn’t time to give up, but if we don’t win soon we need to seriously look at this team.

Complex A complex sentence has an independent clause (that stands alone as a sentence) and a subordinate clause Example: Marnie chose to see the movie, [although she hadn’t yet finished the book].

Subordinating Conjunctions

So let’s subordinate… Because it was raining, While the wind blew, Unless the Maple Leafs improve, Although I was scared, Whenever the stars are out, Unless I get help,

Compound-Complex It has a compound sentence (look for a FANBOY) It also has a subordinate clause Example: Jonathan worked hard on his essay and he declined the invitation to go to the movie [even though his friends were all going].

What type of sentence is this? I admire Duke, but he doesn't admire me, although I try hard to impress him. I admire Duke, but he doesn't admire me, Now…add the second part… although I try hard to impress him. What type of sentence is this? Compound Complex Sentence What is this?

Now you can test your sentence types knowledge! In the following slides, read the sentences. All of them are the same type. What type of sentences are they?

Complex Although my friend invited me to a party, I do not want to go. While he waited at the train station, Joe realized that the train was late. I did not see them at the station because Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus station before noon. Even though he enjoyed the movie, he will not buy the DVD because he only watches films once. Because doctors are concerned about the rising death rate from asthma, they have called for more research into its causes.

Compound Canada is a rich country, but still it has many poor people. Mary and Samantha arrived at the bus station before noon, and they left on the bus before I arrived. Great literature stirs the imagination, but philosophy challenges the intellect. Doctors are concerned about the rising death rate from asthma; they are unsure of its cause.

Compound Complex The package arrived in the morning, but the courier left before I could check the contents. He went to the market because he needed more milk, and then he made pudding. None of the usual definitions of a sentence really says much, but every sentence ought somehow to organize a pattern of thought, even if it does not always reduce the thought to bite-sized pieces. Hatred, which could destroy so much, never failed to destroy the man who hated, and this was an immutable law

Simple Sarah loves to cook from the cookbook How to Feed and Army and Still Have Leftovers. Jane and Pierre have just come back from their trip to Europe. The Languages class will be going to Toronto to the Caribana Festival in Spring. I laughed.
