Cwmaber Junior School TASC Designing and Making a Recycling Bin Work completed by Year 3

Gather and Organise Pupils in Year 3 worked in small groups to share ideas and create layered mind maps use litter bins as their focus.

To design and make a litter bin Identify and Generate Identify / Goal – To design and make a litter bin Using their goal pupils had to record who and where they could go to for help and used the internet to research litter bins using the guided worksheet provided. Then they drew a variety of possible ideas for their litter bin and recorded materials that they could use, using the generate worksheet.

Generate Pupils then drew a variety of possible ideas for their litter bin and recorded materials that they could use.

Decide Pupils then completed a Decide Sheet thinking about what materials they could use and what materials they couldn’t use and why. They also had to choose their best and most practical idea and draw a labelled picture showing which materials they would use. Finally they completed the ‘My Plan’ worksheet detailing things they needed to do and the order that they had to be completed in.

Implement/Evaluate During the Implement Stage pupils brought in or were provided with a range of resources that were used to create their litter bin. The photographs below show the Implement Stage: Throughout this part of the TASC Wheel pupils were discussing what they were making and pupils were evaluating and changing their litter bins. Some children however didn’t keep to their design and created a litter bin out of the materials provided.

Evaluate After making their litter bins pupils completed a simple evaluation sheet considering what they had done, how they could make it better next time and how well they worked as an individual and as part of a group.

Communicate/Reflect As a class we discussed different ways we could present our litter bins to others – use a computer, present to an audience, poster, etc. Pupils in Year 3 decided that they would like to present their litter bins as a poster and to an audience. Whilst presenting their litter bins they – Gave their litter bins a name Described materials they used and why How it was like they plan What changes they made and why How they would change it if they could make it again What they have learnt from the TASC experience

Year 3 – Litter Bins

Examples of selected litter bins This is the bin I made. Next time I will follow my design! I followed my design to make my bin. Next time I would like to put a lid on!

What do you think of our new Cwmaber Litter Bins? Thanks Miss! We had great fun making them, and the MESS!
