Punctuation All languages have symbols that help people make sense of the words they speak and write. For example, periods let a reader know where a thought ends and a new thought begins. I In the English language, symbols such as these are called punctuation marks. Punctuation marks tell readers to pause, to stop, or to read in a questioning, commanding or surprised tone. Punctuation marks also connect certain ideas with other ideas or set ideas apart.

Using the exclamation Mark Exclamation marks are used to punctuate sentences that show strong feelings. Use an exclamation mark to end an exclamatory sentence-that is, to end a statement showing strong emotion. Move away from the fire! You surprised me! Too many exclamation marks can make your writing too emotional. Be sure to use them sparingly.
