Punctuation- End Marks By Ellyn Ball and Lilly Jenkins

Punctuation What is punctuation? How many can you name?

Punctuation All languages have symbols that help people make sense of the words they speak and write. For example, periods let a reader know where a thought ends and a new thought begins. I In the English language, symbols such as these are called punctuation marks. Punctuation marks tell readers to pause, to stop, or to read in a questioning, commanding or surprised tone. Punctuation marks also connect certain ideas with other ideas or set ideas apart.

Punctuation: End Marks Punctuation is an accepted set of symbols used to give specific directions to the reader. These are the most common punctuation marks: Common Punctuation Marks Period . Comma , quotation marks “ “ Question mark ? Semicolon ; hyphen - Exclamation mark ! Colon : apostrophe ‘

Using the Period Sentences, words and phrases may all be concluded with one of the three end marks . These are the three end marks: the period (.), the question mark (?), and the exclamation mark (!). They usually indicate the end of a sentence. The end mark used most often is the period (.).

Recall What are the sentence types and their punctuation marks? Declarative (.) Imperative (.) Interrogative (?) Exclamatory (!)

Using the Period Use a period to end a declarative sentence-that is, to end a statement of fact or opinion. China is a country in Asia. Use a period to end a imperative sentence-that is, to end a direction or command. Listen closely to the tour guide. Use a period after initials and most abbreviations. Mr. Mrs. Dr. Sgt. Jr. R.F. Nordstorm

Using the Question Mark The question mark is most commonly used to end an interrogative sentence, one that ask a question requiring an answer. Who turned in a paper with no name on it? Sometimes a single word or a phrase is used to ask a question. In this situation, the word or phrase is punctuated with a question mark. Where?

Using the exclamation Mark Exclamation marks are used to punctuate sentences that show strong feelings. Use an exclamation mark to end an exclamatory sentence-that is, to end a statement showing strong emotion. Move away from the fire! You surprised me! Too many exclamation marks can make your writing too emotional. Be sure to use them sparingly.

Quick Check In 1980, Dr Jay Arena and his family visited several cities in China! There must have been 2 million bikes racing by then at once. Amazing. They truly risked there lives?

You Do On the left side of your interactive notebook, list one of each kind of end mark learned today (do not use any examples given today). Make sure to illustrate and color code.
