Food analysis Task: There are 7 classes of nutrition. Very few food types hit only one class of nutrition. However, I would like you to firstly decide which class of nutrition these foods given to you go into e.g. Carbohydrate, Fat, Protein. Then break down the ingredients and work out what roll these play in our diet. (Use our textbook and only concern yourselves with the vitamins, minerals etc that are contained in the drinks).

Fats Fat is made up of Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen 2 categories: Saturated and Unsaturated Saturated is when the fatty acid is full of hydrogen atoms. Tend to be from animal fats and in solid form at room temp. Unsaturated can be broken into Monounsaturated 1 double bond (carbon atoms) and polyunsaturated 2 double bonds. Tend to be vegetable fats and in liquid form at room temp. Fat is stored as triglyceride and is a major source of energy for us. Fatty free acids are when the fat can be used for energy as they are in the bloodstream. Fat as an energy source: Positive- huge stores of energy. Negative- requires far more oxygen to break it down. Implications: Good for low intensity bad for high intensity.

Carbohydrates Food is converted into glucose & enters the blood. Insulin regulates the level of glucose in the blood. Excess Glucose is turned into glycogen and stored in the muscles, liver and then is stored as fat. Monosaccharides – most simple e.g. glucose and fructose Disacharides – sugars formed from two monosaccharides e.g. sucrose, lactose and maltose. (fruit, honey) Polysacharides – many monosaccharides e.g. starch, glycogen (potatoes, bread, rice) Speed of energy supply (Discuss bringing in GI)
