SPECIAL AWARDS OFFERED AT INTEL-ISEF SCIENCE FAIRS Dorothy Tepper Head Special Awards Judge 10/05/16

Because our 2017 science and engineering fair is affiliated with the Society for Science and the Public and Intel-ISEF 2017, we are able to provide special awards at our fair

What are Special Awards? Different award category than the cash awards given at the middle- school and high- school levels for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and for Honorable Mention. Given to recognize outstanding students and to increase public and students’ awareness of the mission and scientific work done by the awarding agency

What Organizations Give Special Awards? Professional organizations for scientists Example: Association for Women Geoscientists Universities Example: Yale Science and Engineering Association Academic honor societies Example: Mu Alpha Theta (math) Research branches of the military Example: U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Office of Naval Research

Examples of Participating Government Agencies: - NOAA - NASA - U.S. Navy/Marine Corps Office of Naval Research

Examples of Participating National Professional Societies: • American Meteorological Society • American Psychological Association • Association for Women Geoscientists

Examples of Participating State-Level Organizations: - Virginia Lakes and Watersheds Association - Virginia Dental Association: Science Talent Awards Program

Examples of Participating Foundations, Private Companies, and Honor Societies: ASM Materials Education Foundation Intel Excellence in Computer Science Mu Alpha Theta (math)

What types of awards are given out in the Special Awards category? Certificates of Achievement Medallions and lapel pins Cash awards * The Office of Naval Research awards all 3 types of prizes to each of its high- school- level prize winners

What is the Judging Procedure for the Special Awards? It varies with the agency providing the Special Award: Some agencies provide very specific instructions for the judge along with a rating form for each project. Other agencies are less strict and give the judge more latitude. Some agencies will provide a judge from their organization .

Who were the Judges at the 2016 Fair? The judges came from academic institutions, government science agencies, branches of the military, and private companies. The same teams of judges that determined the first, second, and third-place winners and the honorable- mention winners also judged for almost all of the special awards. However, the Office of Naval Research provided their own judge, Commander Carl Carney, for their awards.

Special Awards Presented at the Fauquier County 2016 Science Fair • 13 special awards from different organizations were presented to a total of 26 students from middle schools and high schools.

Special Awards Given at 2016 Fair American Psychological Association Award Association for Women Geoscientists Award Intel Excellence in Computer Science Award Mu Alpha Theta Award NASA Earth System Science Award • NOAA “Taking the Pulse of the Planet” Award • RICOH Sustainable Development Award • U.S. Air Force Award U.S. Metric Association Award U.S. Office of Naval Research Award VA Dental Association, Northern VA Dental Society Award VA Lakes and Watersheds Association Award Yale Science and Engineering Association Award

How Will We Determine Which Special Awards Will be Offered at our 2017 Science Fair? We will receive a regional-fair-level Special Awards Packet from the Awards and Education Program of the Society for Science and the Public. Their programs also include: - the INTEL International Science and Engineering Fair - Broadcom MASTERS competition The packet will contain a list of the 2017 Special Awards, specific information about each award, and the actual certificates, medallions, etc.

The Special Awards Packet should arrive by Christmas!

As Head Special Awards Judge, I’ll do the following: a. familiarize myself with the various awards available for the 2017 regional fair b. when a list of project titles becomes available, I’ll work with Chandra and Dee to determine which special awards we would like to give out c. line up a team of judges for each Special Award • some organizations may provide a judge • some judge teams may cover more than one Special Award
