Muscles action and groupings A review of ideas

Muscle Definition Muscle tissues can contract They operate by muscle fibers shortening There are 3 types of muscle Tissue: 1. Skeletal Muscle Tissue 2. Smooth Muscle Tissue 3. Cardiac Muscle Tissue

Skeletal Muscle Tissue Found in skeletal muscles Used in movement of bones at joints Helps maintain posture Has striations Many Nuclei Voluntarily Controlled Well-developed transverse tubule system Contracts and relaxes rapidly

Smooth Muscle Tissue Found in walls of hollow viscera Used in movement of viscera and peristalsis NO striations Single Nucleus Lacks transverse tubules Involuntarily controlled Contracts and relaxes slowly

Cardiac Muscle Tissue Found only in walls of heart Used in pumping action of the heart into blood vessels and heart chambers Has striations Single nucleus Has intercalated disks shown in picture Fibers branch off one another Involuntarily controlled

This is what a relaxed muscle looks like….. And this is what a contracted muscle looks like.
