Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids P. 48  LT: I can describe and locate the metals, nonmetals, and metalloids on the periodic table. Metals – good conductors of heat and electricity, all but Mercury are solid at room temperature. Metals are located to the left of stair step

P. 48  Alkali Metals – (Group 1) are the most reactive of all metals; don’t occur in nature in their element form.

P. 48 /49 Alkaline Earth Metals – (group 2) shiny, ductile and malleable; combine readily with other elements. Ductile: made into long wire Malleable: made into shapes

Inner Transition Metals – (listed below table) P. 48/49  Transition Elements – (groups 3-12) most familiar metals because they often occur in nature uncombined. Inner Transition Metals – (listed below table) Lanthanide Series – elements with atomic number 58-71 Actinide Series – elements with atomic number 90-103

P. 48/49/50  Nonmetals – elements that are usually gases or brittle solids at room temperature; located to the right of the stair step Noble Gases – (group 18) exist as isolated atoms. They are all stable because outer energy level is filled.

Elements that react with a metal and forms a salt. P. 48/49/50 Halogen- (Group 17) which are fluoride, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine Elements that react with a metal and forms a salt. React readily with other elements and form compounds. Only occurs naturally in compounds

P. 48/49/50 Metalloids – elements that make up stair step; have metallic and non-metallic properties Metalloids are part of the mixed groups – which contain metals, non-metals and metalloids. Color: Boron, Silicon, Germanium, Arsenic, Antimony, Tellurium, Polonium

Color Nonmetals- Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Selenium Color Other Metals-Aluminum, Gallium, Indium, Tin, Thallium, Lead, Bismuth, Ununtrium, Ununquadium, Ununpentium, Ununhexium Draw your stair case with a dark marker.

Groups of the Periodic Table Foldable (Write at the top of p. 52) LT- I can use characteristics of atoms/molecules to recognize elemental groups within the periodic table. (Write this going down the side of p.52 so your foldable with fit on p. 52 too.)

Foldable On the color paper, fold your paper to make double doors. Then cut into six doors. Glue down on page 52.

Alkaline Earth Metals (Outside) (Inside) Metallic/shiny Easily made into shapes and wire Calcium is in our bones to make them strong and it is also in our milk

Transitional Metals (Outside) (Inside) High densities, strong, & resistance to corrosion Good Building Material

Metalloids (Outside) (Inside) Divide the table between metals and nonmetals. Mixed Group Arsenic is poison, usually In rat poisoning

Halogens (Outside) (Inside) means "salt-former” Reacts with a metal and form a salt Less reactive as you go down the group

Noble Gases (Outside) (Inside) Stable Makes signs that lights up in different colors

Scavenger Hunt Begin on the Scavenger Hunt. This should be done independently with only the help of your periodic table. This will be taken for a grade. At the end of class, whether completed or not, turn it in to the basket.
