Resources for Students

It’s About Confidence http://bit.ly/sat_confidence Let’s start the discussion of Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy by talking what it’s really about: building student confidence and giving all students the feeling that they can succeed on the SAT and open up opportunities for their future. [In slideshow mode, click the image of the video to launch the YouTube link. Make sure you have internet access and are hooked up to speakers. If you don’t have internet/speakers, try and download in advance to play, or you can direct attendees to http://bit.ly/sat_confidence to view themselves.] http://bit.ly/sat_confidence

Students Answer The Call 3 million unique users Over 1 million linked accounts 10% drop in paid-for commercial test prep resources "If you don’t have money to pay for a class, you’re usually just stuck buying a book or you’re on your own mostly, so this time it was really helpful that they had unlimited resources basically for anyone.” – Maia, Washington, DC We’re excited about the reach that has already happened. For some context, in the class of 2015, 1.7 million students took the SAT overall. So 2.7 million is a big number here. 1 million students have linked their accounts, giving us what we believe to be the largest example of personalized learning in the world. Nearly 60% of all test takers who took the new SAT this spring and practiced for the test reported using Official SAT Practice to prepare, compared to 19% who used commercial test prep, and there was a 10% drop in the number of students who paid for SAT prep resources (measured by surveying students and comparing year over year results). Lowering test prep usage isn’t a goal of our work here — but it is a goal to create a product that is so strong that students who might otherwise pay to prep instead choose to use Official SAT Practice because it’s that good. Some anecdotal remarks here: Maia talks about feeling “stuck” if you don’t have money otherwise. What a terrible way to feel about such an important test. Fixing that problem is important for us. Lauren talks about never feeling more confident before in her life. For someone who has probably taken a lot of tests in her life, it’s great that the one that is perhaps the most impactful is the one that she is most confident in. And then Edie encapsulates a feeling of readiness and excitement that we want all of our students to share.

Who Are These 3 Million Students? Almost half of all spring SAT test takers used Official SAT Practice on KhanAcademy.org to prepare for the SAT 64% found it “extremely” or “very” helpful A roughly equal percentage of Khan Academy users (34.6%) are students of color compared to the total testing population (32.0%) We are reaching low-income students: in households with incomes under $75k a greater percentage of students have linked accounts than not Over half of all high schools in America have at least one student with a linked account, with the highest linking rate in Michigan and Florida The asterisk is a kinda-joke: the real test results aren’t in, of course.

Step 1: Log in to Khan Academy Account Log in to Khan Academy or Create a Khan Academy account Go to satpractice.org Click green button labeled “Check it out now” Sign in with Gmail, Facebook, or click “Sign up with email” If you click Sign in with Gmail or Facebook, enter in your username and password for either these accounts and you are signed in If you click “Sign up with email” Enter in First Name/Last name/Email/Birthdate and click “Sign Up” An email will been sent to your account to verify; sign in to your email Open email from Khan Academy accounts and click on the “Finish Signing Up” button A welcome screen will appear where you will enter username and password and click “Sign Up”

Step 2: Link Khan Academy and College Board Account You have logged into Khan Academy for the first time and will be asked if you would like to send PSAT results during the initial onboarding questions If you have already gone through the onboarding process, a prompt will appear asking if you want to send your PSAT results to Khan Academy After choosing that option, you will be directed to collegeboard.org

Step 3: Sign In To College Board Account Sign in to your College Board account; if you do not have a College Board account, click 'Sign Up' to create one. The steps for creating a College Board account are: Click on the “Sign up” blue box Fill in the fields to create your student account ensuring all information is correct Click “Next” at the bottom when all fields are completed You are now Signed In Please note that students under 13 cannot create a College Board Account.

Step 4: Click “Send” To Authorize After successfully logging in to your College Board account, you will be asked to authorize the account linking. After clicking “Send” you will be redirected to SAT practice on the Khan Academy site. You can remove the link at any time, by clicking on “Revoke” which is found in College Board account settings.

Step 5: Start Practicing You can start your practice in Math or Evidence Based Reading & Writing. The recommendations are based on how you did on the PSAT/NMSQT or PSAT 8/9. Keep practicing – with each additional problem and activity the personalization gets stronger and gets you closer to your goal score on the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9.

Step 6: Get Personalized Practice Based on SAT Suite Assessments Results This is only available to students who link their accounts. 13

Daily Practice for the SAT® Daily SAT practice questions Instant practice test scoring The SAT Daily Practice App is available in through the App Store or via Google play for android users. The app has many helpful functions that include: Daily practice questions! Scan and Score feature: When students take practice tests on Khan Academy (which entails printed the test and filling in the answer sheet), they are then able to take a picture of their answers sheets on their phone and receive a scored exam momentarily! Students’ practice test data goes directly to inform their Khan Academy practice instantly, which further updates their personalized practice. Students are able to see information about their practice tests, such as how many questions they answered correctly, incorrectly, or omitted altogether. By the way, students should not be omitting questions since the SAT now has no penalty for guessing. Students can see your performance history from your practice tests, allowing them to better track their progress. If students accounts are linked, they can connect directly to the mobile version of Khan Academy from the Daily Practice App. 14

Khan Academy Resources Go to satpractice.org/k12 for resources about Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy. View sample study plans and study- group ideas at sat.org/studygroup. Student resources for the SAT and PSAT-related assessments are at sat.org/k12. Instructional videos on Khan Academy at youtube.com/collegeboard. In order to broaden the reach of these world-class tools and deepen their impact with students, it is imperative that we support educators. Khan will be adding 2 practice tests in the next month, followed by automatic essay scoring this fall. Developing a coach feature for educators is a high priority, but still cannot place a date on when that feature will be ready. Everyone should bookmark satpractice.org/k12 for great resources including flyers like the one you see here. To watch a walkthrough video of Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy, visit the “Tips and Strategies” tab after logging in at satpractice.org To Access sample study plans and guidance for creating study groups visit sat.org/studygroup For Resources and tools to help prepare students visit sat.org/k12 Watch helpful videos at youtube.com/collegeboard for instructions on Khan Academy features PRESENTER NOTE: Some slides in the program updates section of the presentation will have a WEBINAR ICON in the bottom right or left hand corner. Speaker notes have been added to highlight the webinar which will be covering the material presented in the slide. Visit: collegeboard.roadtripnation.com We’re excited to announce the next phase in turning the SAT into a launching pad for student opportunity! We’ve heard that students and partners want more guidance and connection to careers, and we wanted to do that in a way that’s authentic and speaks to students. Roadmap to Careers is live today! Both educator and student accounts will work. Students will have had to take at least one SAT Suite assessment to access Roadmap to Careers. Visit: collegeboard.roadtripnation.com

Goals for Roadmap to Careers Motivate Prepare Expose Inspire college readiness for students Ensure prerequisite courses are completed Open students’ eyes to new opportunities Our goals were to simplify the process (from the typical 75-question diagnostic tool to a three question authentic exploration tool) in order to expose students to a variety of opportunities and make sure they are aware of what courses they should be taking as early as possible, so that they don’t wind up senior year without having the math they need to apply to college (as an example.)

Students Choose Their Core Interests Question 1 Students start by choosing their interests, beginning with what lights them up at their core.

Students Choose Their Core Interests Question 2 Students continue by choosing what interests them the most.

Students Choose Their Core Interests Question 3 Finally, students select a third area of interest.

And Receive a Personalized Journey The student roadmap Roadmap to careers can then blend all of those interests together to create a personalized journey for students through people, careers, and majors that align with students’ interests. (Please note that students can create several roadmaps and save them all to their account.)

A Look at Careers That May be of Interest Students receive several career suggestions—along with profiles and videos of real-world leaders working in these fields. Students are asked whether or not they find the suggestions for careers interesting. They can save those of interest to them and dismiss those that they do not find interesting.

A Look at Leaders with Similar Interests Students can view leaders who match their interests. Students are able to follow the career journeys of real people who share their interests. These leaders span all levels of notoriety and success. Students can watch videos where these Leaders talk about their path, and they can see what education and path these leaders have followed.

A Look at College Majors That Align with Students’ Career Interests Students also learn about majors that align to their interests, get tangible recommendations for ways to be ready for this major (through coursework and otherwise), and see examples of Leaders who have followed a similar path.

Actionable Feedback Based on Results Finally, students get actionable feedback based on their results so they know what they can be doing in high school to work toward their goals. Students learn about careers that align with their interests and can make direct connections to the work they do in high school and college.

Actions Related to Students’ Career Interests Students will get action ideas for things they can try out while in high school. 26

High School Course and College Majors Suggestions Students can connect to Big Future Students will get information on courses that they can take in high school that match their interests and aspirations. Students will also get a list of majors to consider in college, given their interests. They will be able to search for colleges and universities that offer those majors by accessing Big Future directly from the Roadmap to Careers tool. If they already have a profile set up in Big Future, the parameters they have set will be applied to the search (e.g., if a student is only interested in small private colleges in a particular location, those parameters will be applied to the search.)

Connect To Big Future to See Which Colleges Offer Certain Majors Students are connected to College Board’s Big Future to see which colleges offer their prospective majors. If they already have a profile set up in Big Future, the parameters they have set will be applied to the search (e.g., if a student is only interested in small private colleges in a particular location, those parameters will be applied to the search.)
