Essential Question: How do the functions of the human body systems interact? Today I will learn about the Endocrine System because it is responsible for controlling metabolism and maintaining homeostasis in the body.

Endocrine System Main Function: It releases hormones into the blood to signal other cells to behave in certain ways. It is a slow but widespread form of communication.

Main Organs Endocrine glands: release hormones into the bloodstream. Hormones are chemicals released in one part of the body that travel through the bloodstream and affect the activities of cells in other parts of the body.

Major Organs Thyroid Gland Function: plays a major role in regulating the body’s metabolism Parathyroid Gland Function: Makes hormone that controls the mineral levels in bones and blood

Major Organs Pancreas Function: The insulin and glycogen in the pancreas help to keep the level of glucose in the blood stable.

Major Organs Adrenal Gland Functions: 1. Releases adrenalin in the body that helps prepare for and deal with stress. 2. Also regulates kidney function.

Major Organs Pituitary Gland Function: It secretes nine hormones that directly regulate many body functions and controls functions of other glands.

Complications Diabetes is a defect in the body’s ability to convert glucose to energy. Gigantism occurs when the pituitary gland produces too much growth hormone. Robert Waldow is the tallest man to ever live. He was 8 ft 11 inches and weighed 490 lbs. He died in 1940 at the age of 22.
