Framework for Purdue Data Collection Cirrus SR-20 Aircraft Garmin G1000 - 99 parameters being recorded Internal Flight data system records and processes 133 parameters Cirrus SR-20 AATDs Garmin G1000 - 99 parameters being recorded/uploaded Phenom 100 Data being sent directly to Embraer

Depending on the data system, what do we want to know?

What is the current health of the aircraft? Who wants to know…… What is the current health of the aircraft? Owner Pilot Mechanic Passengers FAA

Where do the current aircraft problems exist? Who wants to know…… Where do the current aircraft problems exist? Maintenance Technician Pilot Owner/Administration

How was this airplane flown? Who wants to know…… How was this airplane flown? Prospective Buyer Flight Instructor Administration FAA Insurance Companies

How are my flying skills? Who wants to know…… How are my flying skills? Pilot Flight Instructor FAA Administration Designated Examiner Insurance companies

Are there precursors to an accident in our operation? Who wants to know…… Are there precursors to an accident in our operation? Everyone

“He’s supposed to be talking about data integration into collegiate SMS!!!” “Why isn’t he talking SMS???

The Next Frontier – Let’s Go Boldly!! Get “Data” out of solely SMS & get into training & evaluation. Connect performance/proficiency to actual operations. Data can show real world failure, need for additional help, and SUCCESS!!

Pilots don’t view the PTS as a standard “If pilots merely flew to the current private pilot PTS just as they are written today, the number of accidents would plummet” I agree, but…… Pilots don’t view the PTS as a standard The PTS is perceived as a “gate” that must be navigated

I would argue that most pilots feel they ARE flying to an acceptable standard Data can reveal the achievement of a standard No longer a measure of pass/fail, but a measure of stability and success.

Who has heard the phrase…. How many Flight Instructors and Designated Examiners do we have in the room? Who has heard the phrase…. “He really passed? His landings have been terrible recently?” “I can’t believe she did that. She’s never done that before.” In the past, what could we do about this?

Phase Check Evaluation Subject AT 243 Phase Check AT 248 Combined AT 243/248 Subjective Grade 1 219 157 186 208 16 2 192 91 153 179 18 3 198 176 147 181 4 195 139 164 185 19 5 210 89 194 205 6 187 102 188 7 268 263 146 228 8 184 155 174 9 200 218 202 15 10 203 74 201 11 239 17 12 182 124 260 13 355 141 458 372

Phase Check Evaluation

Statistical Evaluations Who here would accept an article for a professional journal about an evaluation where the author only used 1 subject for evaluation instead of the traditional 30? Why do we award certification with having observed one of each maneuver? I’m being unfair….

Statistical Evaluations With Statistical Regression we can… Predict performance Determine critical parameters for performance Identify precursors for various events Why should we not use this data?

A modified way of doing things Real feedback Instructors can't possibly "catch" all the GOOD and bad in a flight No more “fine” solo flights   "Smart" Flight Review (61.57) Instead of 1 hour ground / 1 hour flight

A modified way of doing things Integrate Smart Curriculum Positive Identification of Airmen Password? Biometric? Physical? Voice? Feedback Mechanism Sliding Limitations

A modified way of doing things Linking with other Databases National Weather Service Validation of crosswind proficiency Capture Flights Instructor/Student Playback Designated Pilot Examiner Validation / Certification Identification of “critical” maneuvers / assessment areas

What if the data shows that the pilot isn't proficient? Data Dilemma… What if the data shows that the pilot isn't proficient? What if they got their certificate in a non-data aircraft and then the data reveals deficiencies? Who responds? FAA? Instructors? Insurance Companies?

Problems with Data Integration What about non-data aircraft? How do they get integrated into a data centric system? What about indemnification? Training doesn’t work unless we tie the data to a specific person Who has control of the data? Student (logbooks)? Owner? Can/should the data be scrubbed?

We can’t do this, what about….. Are instructors & flight operations more liable with data recorders? FERPA (Family Education Rights Privacy Act)? Who's going to regulate the data Insurance companies? FAA? Self–Regulate? Man vs. Machine – Who’s right?

Accreditation isn't the primary answer here. The Challenge….. Accreditation isn't the primary answer here. Collaborative research is the answer.   Players: FAA, Insurance, Collegiate aviation, AOPA, FSF, EAA, NAFI, SAFE Will take years to realize…..

Questions??? Data is a wonderful tool for SMS Summation Data is a wonderful tool for SMS But there is so much more. Let’s get to work!! Questions???
