James Langston Hughes

James Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902. Background James Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902. Shortly after his birth, Hughes parents separated. His father moved to Mexico where he continued to reside as a successful attorney and landowner. Meantime, Hughes remained with his mother in Lawrence , Kansas . For the next eight years Hughes lived primarily with his grandmother. Hughes mother wasn’t around much due to the fact that she had to work mostly odd jobs, and was continuously looking for new work in order to support her family. James Langston Hughes was born February 1, 1902 and on May 22, 1967 he died of cancer.

Education Langston Hughes went to Central High School in Cleveland, Ohio. James Langston Hughes attended Columbia University and Lincoln University in Pennsylvania where he received his BA degree.

Accomplishments When Langston was in the eighth grade he was known as the class poet. Langston Hughes had many poems and short plays to appear in NAACP publication Crisis Magazines and in opportunity magazine and other publications.
