What can you learn about Nazi Culture from the following slides? Consider: What did the Nazis hope to achieve through their ‘culture’? How effective do you think it was?

Art

Architecture Hitler’s most grandiose architectural project was to rebuild Berlin as a new city of Germania by 1950. It would give the regime power and permanence and last a Thousand Years. Hitler himself drew up the guidelines, there was to be a vast domed hall and a triumphant arch. Albert Speer was put in charge of the construction; but little was actually built.

Regulated by the Reich Film Chamber, Goebbels made himself responsible for approving every film made in Germany. The most famous Nazi producer was Leni Riefenstahl who made detailed recordings of rallies and festivals to inform people about all that was happening in Nazi Germany and to encourage their participation. Her most famous film was Triumph of Will (1935) about the 1934 Nuremberg Rally. The most famous anti-Semitic film was The Eternal Jew. Hitler insisted that it be as horrific as possible; but it was a flop in the cinemas and many found it too grim and there were even incidences of fainting. Goebbels realised that films were more successful if the message was given subtly – newsreels at the start of all films proved effective. Film

PROPAGANDA

What impact did these changes have on the people in Germany? Do you think they had a negative impact? Would people realise they are being so heavily controlled? Do the positives of the Nazi regime outweigh the negatives for most Germans? Keep in mind the key question: To what extent did Germans benefit from Nazi in the 1930s?
