Katowice – about the city Katowice is a city which is a part of the Silesian aglomeration with a population of 2 million. Katowice is the capital of Silesia. It used to be known as the centre of the Polish heavy industry. Now it is being transformed into a modern city and one of the most attractive investment areas in Eastern Europe. Katowice is the large local centre of science, culture, industry, business and transportation. ● Area: 164.5 sq km ● Population: 320 thousand

The History of the City Silesia became part of the Polish state in the 10th century. Through the ages it belonged to the Czech, the Austrian, the German Empire, and finally back to Poland. Katowice was a little village until the 19th century, when the first coal mines were built here. For many years it was a German city, but people who lived here fought to belong to Poland. After World War I three uprisings took place in Silesia, then the plebiscite was organised and eventually Katowice became the capital of Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. The city was occupied by Nazi Germany between 1939-1945.
