What is PLT? Personal Learning Thinking Skills LEARNING TO LEARN September 2008 MCA

The Press Release PLT focuses on competencies and the process of “learning to learn”. The PLT curriculum will emphasise particular skills such as: learning styles and research skills thinking skills organisation skills team work - working with people and sharing your learning managing information understanding and expressing your views and opinions.

How are the lessons different? The lessons will include more role play, group work and sharing of ideas. The aim is to tie new information to what they already know – using examples that are relevant to their life experience

Overview of the Year There will be four topics in the year. In the first term we will establish the Core Skills. Learning Styles Thinking Methods Team Work Finding and Using Information Communication

Overview of the Year contd. The remainder of the year will be used for project based work. This is the chance to really make their learning relevant. Using their experiences in Honiton to create understanding and interest in the wider world around them. So…

The Projects Identity Enterprise The Jurassic Coast

Identity Who am I? What do I believe? What do I want to be? Where do I live? How Do I Live? How have people lived? How do other people live? To answer these questions we will listen to student testimonies, walk the high street, investigate places of worship, look at diaries from Honiton museum and learn about the experiences of children in other countries. We will present our new knowledge in articles in the newsletter, pieces of drama in assemblies, presentations to other groups in our year and displays in the museum.

Enterprise We will investigate Honiton Market, making money in Honiton (past and present), branding and advertising. We will have guest speakers from the local area to share their experiences and compare this to experiences from other countries. We will create products inspired by this to promote and present for sale on the Market.

Jurassic Coast We will consider the awe and wonder of our local environment and why it is our responsibility to look after it. Using objects from Honiton Museum to bring the history to life. We will investigate creation myths, the art that responds to our environment and geographical explanations for the environment around us. We will consider other sites that have been designated as World Heritage Sites, debate the decisions and present proposals for the future.

The Passport All the above will be monitored through The Passport. This booklet will go home at the beginning, middle and end of the topics for Parents/ Carers to review. From this your child can see how their Core Skills are developing and what they need to improve.

Next Step… The students will enter Yr8 with the Core Skills to develop their subject specific knowledge. They will be enthusiastic, engaged, reflective learners who share responsibility for their own development and demonstrate independence.
