excerpted from preceptaustin.org “Adam Clarke (c. 1762 - 1832) was a British Methodist theologian and Biblical scholar. He is chiefly remembered for writing a commentary on the Bible which took him 40 years to complete and which was a primary Methodist theological resource for two centuries.” www.studylight.org “It is difficult to conceive how the opinion could have crept into the Church, or prevailed there, that ‘the apostle speaks here of his regenerate state; and that what was, in such a state, true of himself, must be true of all others in the same state.’ This opinion has, most pitifully and most shamefully, not only lowered the standard of Christianity, but destroyed its influence and disgraced its character. It requires but little knowledge of the spirit of the Gospel, and of the scope of this epistle [Romans], to see that the apostle is, here, [speaking of one of two possibilities of one who was unregenerate].” excerpted from preceptaustin.org

“In summary, the later part of chapter 7 deals with Paul before he repented and followed Christ. We know for certain no Christian, as we have seen in chapter 6, would cry ‘Wretched man that I am!’ (7:24).” Leland M. Haines, December 1997 excerpted from www.bibleviews.com

ARTICLE 6. SALVATION BY GRACE THROUGH FAITH Saving Faith involves a full surrender of the will, a confident trust in Christ, the giving of self to Him, a joyful obedience to His Word as a faithful disciple, and an attitude of love to all people. A Mennonite Confession of Faith Formulated by The Fellowship of Concerned Mennonite - 1990 excerpted from www.bibleviews.com “We believe that one is saved by the grace of God and not by character, law, good works, or ceremonies. The merits of the death and resurrection of Christ are adequate for the salvation of all, offered to all, and intended for all. However, salvation is appropriated only by faith in Christ. Those who repent and believe in Christ as Savior and Lord are born again, adopted into the family of God, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is the privilege of every believer to have the full assurance of salvation through the keeping power of God. As long as the believer lives, he stands in constant need of forgiveness, cleansing, and the grace of Christ.” John 3:16; 10:27-29; Romans 4; Ephesians 2:8-10; I Peter 1:21; John 1:8-10, 5:13; Jude 24.

excerpted from preceptaustin.org (v 14) “[The phrase ‘sold under sin’] describes all of us by nature. Instead of being spiritual and therefore able to hearken to, delight in and obey God's holy spiritual Law, we are turned back, since Adam sinned, to a fleshly condition, our spirits by nature dead to God, and our soul-faculties under the domination of the still unredeemed body. Now Paul, though his spirit was quickened (saved, born again); and his inward desires, therefore, were toward God's Law; found to his horror his state by nature ‘carnal’, ‘fleshly’, ‘sold under sin.’ How little humanity realizes this awful, universal fact about man—sold under sin! Sold under sin is exactly what the new convert does not know! Forgiven, justified, he knows himself to be: and he has the joy of it! But now to find an evil nature, of which he had never become really conscious, and of which he thought himself fully rid, when he first believed, is a ‘second lesson’ which is often more bitter than the first—of guilt!” (v 21) “[Paul] now states as a settled conclusion, what he has experimentally discovered. And we all need to consent to the fact—even if we have found God's way of deliverance, that evil is present. It is the denial of this fact that has wrecked thousands of lives! For evil will be present until the Lord comes, bringing in the redemption of our bodies.” excerpted from preceptaustin.org
