He was simply asking a personal favor for Himself because His thirst was so excruciating. He was seeking relief so He could loudly make the final two statements, declaring His victory. John recorded this to combat the early development of gnosticism - Jesus really was human.

What was really going on? This was the Son of God who as a man offered Himself as the perfect sin offering to resolve the problem of sin. God-forsakenness! Prior to, and during His incarnation He had a deep intimate fellowship with the Father... Thirsting for God! ...until He was hung on the cross!
