Somatotypes Revisited: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWxlZ52O0rI

Learning Objective: Consider the differences that exist between males and females.

Discuss this Statement – Do You Agree? Men are better than Women at sport!

Discuss this Statement – Do You Agree? Men work harder than Women at sport and so deserve to get paid more!

Should Wimbledon and other sports competitions offer equal prize money for men and women? Novak Djokovic won the Australian Open men's crown with a five-set victory over Rafael Nadal which took almost six hours to complete. On Saturday night, Victoria Azarenka captured her maiden grand slam final with a straight-sets triumph over Maria Sharapova. Their Rod Laver Arena performance lasted just 88 minutes. Azarenka pocketed $2.3 million for winning while Sharapova, who won just three games, picked up $1.15 million for her part in the decider. Djokovic and Nadal were written cheques for $2.3 million and $1.15 million respectively.

Women and the Olympics: First modern day Olympic Games was in Athens 1896. How many women competed? Zero! Women first competed in the Olympics in 1900 Paris Games – lawn tennis and golf. What was the first year (Olympic Games) where men and women competed in every event? 2012 London Olympic Games. IOC voted to include women’s boxing.

Physical Differences: It is not a sexist view to state that there are differences between males and females because this is a scientific proven fact.

Physical Differences: Body shape, size and physique Hearts and lungs Strength and power Muscle mass – flexibility Rates of maturity differ

Should sports be gender segregated? Question??? Should sports be gender segregated?

Are Women Always Disadvantaged? No! Think about activities. When could it be an advantage? When could it be a disadvantage? Less weight, greater flexibility – gymnastics? – often better to be a woman. Strength and power – shot-putt – often better to be a man.

Are Women Always Disadvantaged? Their differences are recognised, which is why males and females complete in single sex competitions at the top level. This is also why males and females are judged against the criteria and not against each other or GCSE practical purposes!

Perceived Differences: Discrimination has often meant that women are seen as the ‘weaker sex’ and not allowed the same opportunities as men. Many sports are seen as traditionally male. What is the fastest growing sport? How can women and religion have an impact on them taking part in sport?

Perceived Differences: What is the fastest growing sport? Women's football How can women and religion have an impact on them taking part in sport? In certain religions women need to remain covered as a requirement of their faith and this can restrict opportunities to participate. Historically there have been fewer opportunities for women. It is only recently that women have been granted equal opportunities to become official, managers e.t.c

Learning Objective: Consider the differences that exist between males and females. ALL: D-E State basic physical differences between males and females. MOST: B-C Add in reasons why competition is usually single sex. SOME: A-A* Add in reasons why competition is usually single sex, giving specific sporting examples.

Homework: This is to be done on paper. Your books must be handed in this lesson. Find out the events where women compete directly against men. Read the ‘coming up short’ article on the VLE under Topic 3 and come to next lesson ready with your comments, ideas, argument.
