“What must we do?” February 16, 2014 River Bend

Introduction Acts 2:37 - “37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” Peter’s gospel message The Romans Road: Plan of Salvation Purpose of our study

The Grace of God The manifestation of God’s grace - Titus 2:11-14 - “11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to all men, 12 instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires and to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age, 13 looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus, 14 who gave Himself for us to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for Himself a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.”

The Grace of God Understanding the conditions of God’s grace - Ephesians 2:8-9 - “8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Man’s obedience does not negate God’s grace. The Grace of God Understanding the conditions of God’s grace - Ephesians 2:8-9 - Basics concerning God’s grace - Genesis 6-9 - Noah and the flood. Joshua 6 - Joshua and the battle of Jericho Man’s obedience does not negate God’s grace.

The importance of believing How can one be saved without first believing? Mark 16:16 - “16 He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned.” Acts 4:12 - “12 And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

The importance of believing We must believe in the deity of Christ - Acts 2:36 - “…has made Him both Lord and Christ–this Jesus whom you crucified.” Acts 8:37 - “…I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.” Romans 10:9-10 - “that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord…”

The importance of believing Does belief imply action/obedience? The demons believe - James 2:19; Matthew 8:28-29; Acts 19:11-15 The Philippian jailer - Acts 16:22-34 What did it mean for the Philippian jailer - “having believed?”

Repenting of our sins Our acknowledgement of sin - Romans 3:23; 6:23; John 3:18 Our change of mind and action - Ezekiel 18:30 All men are called to repent - Luke 13:3; Acts 17:30 Our belief in God should drive us to repentance - Mark 1:15

Conclusion The conclusion of the Romans Road to salvation - Receive Jesus as your Savior - O God, I confess to you that I am a sinner. I believe that Christ died for my sins. I am turning now to you from my sin and now receive Christ as my Savior. Thank you for saving me and help me to live for you. In Jesus name. Amen.

Conclusion What about the Bible? “Repent and be baptized…” - Acts 2:38 Is baptism essential for salvation? - Acts 2:38; 8:12-13; 8:38; 9:18 (22:16); 10:47-48; 16:14-15; 16:33; 18:8; 19:5 The Romans road excludes baptism - Romans 6:3-4; 1 Peter 3:21

Conclusion What about the Bible? “Repent and be baptized…” The Romans road excludes baptism Live faithfully - Revelation 2:10; 2 Timothy 4:8; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 By which will we be saved: The Romans Road, or the Bible?
