Genetic Counseling the Benson's How to write your report

The Cover-page Include a cover-page that includes Your Name The report title The clients Don’t forget to include the rubric at the very front of your report. i.e. in front of the cover page

The Cover Letter This is where your 5 paragraphs go. Do not provide subheadings or labels for this letter. Paragraph 1 Reflect a statement of the problem back to the Benson’s. Paragraph 2 How do the Medical histories of Tom and Deborah help you in your role as a genetic councilor? Paragraph 3/4 Write brief medical description of Downs syndrome and Cystic Fibrosis (brief = about 50-100 words each. (tell them more detail can be found in your science section) Paragraph 5 Summarize your report contents to Deborah and Tom (Hint: be brief and tell them more detail can be found in your conclusions section. Also, avoid opinion)

The Science Section This will make up the bulk of your report Split it into two clearly labelled sections, one for Downs and one for Cystic Fibrosis. It is intended to provide detailed information about each of the diseases.

The Science section Each section should include LABELLED subsections that discuss: What the disease is, its symptoms (include causes and risk analysis) Tests Treatments/cures/options Inheritance patterns in Benson Family (Pedigrees and Punnets for CF and Age vs Risk Table for DS)

Summary section These paragraphs should be clearly labelled with the following subheadings: Introduction: An opening paragraph explaining what the report has done and what is contained in the conclusion section CF Research: Concentrate on describing the inheritance patterns of CF and Downs Downs Syndrome research: Some options for having a child with Cystic Fibrosis Some Options for having a child with Downs: A Paragraph each summarizing the pros/cons and options for testing for CF and Downs and options after getting the results Summary: An exit paragraph with a few final words. You should include implications for the family and the impact on insurance availability/premiums in this section. Avoid opinion. This report is about providing information and options. NOT about making things “better”

Appendices/Table of contents/Reference List You may opt to include your Punnet square analysis and Pedigrees as an appendix at the end of your report or embed them in the science section. Just be sure to reference it if you decide to include it as an appendix. A table of contents is optional. It should appear at the beginning of your report after the cover page and before your cover letter.
