1-6 Subtracting Integers p.29

Subtracting Integers When subtracting integers: Change the subtraction sign to addition

Subtracting Integers When subtracting integers: Change the subtraction sign to addition Change the sign of ONLY the next number to its opposite.

Subtracting Integers When subtracting integers: Change the subtraction sign to addition Change the sign of ONLY the next number to its opposite. Follow the rules for addition

EXAMPLE 14 – (-12) 14 – (-12) Change the operation to addition 14 – (-12) Change the next number to its opposite Then follow the rules for addition. The signs are now the same, so add and give the common sign. 14 + 12 = 26.

EXAMPLE -28 – (-20) = -28 – (-20) = Change the operation to addition -28 – (-20) = Change the next number to its opposite Now the signs are different, so find the difference (subtract) and give the sign of the larger absolute value. 28 – 20 = 8. -28 has a larger absolute value, it is negative so the answer to the problem is negative. -28 – (-20) = -8

TRY THIS 32 – (-3) = -40 – 66 = 2 – 48 =

TRY THIS 32 – (-3) = -40 – 66 = 2 – 48 = 35

TRY THIS 32 – (-3) = -40 – 66 = 2 – 48 = 35 -106

TRY THIS 32 – (-3) = -40 – 66 = 2 – 48 = 35 -106 -46

Modeling Integers Yellow chips = positive numbers Red chips = negative numbers Use a mat to show each addend. Write your answers with a picture and final answer. Use zero pairs to remove chips from the mat. (one yellow and one red)

P.23 Example 1: 2 + (-5) = -3 -1 + 4 = 7 + (-3) = -2 + (-2) =

P.29 Example 1: -6 – (-2) = -4 -7 – (-2) = -4 – (-3) = -8 – (-5) =
