OUTSOURCED INDIA Describing broad cultural differences between societies Noor ali alattas – h00269878.

USA: LOW INDIA: HIGH #scene1 13:40 – 14:14 In this scene, the woman were ask Todd some personal questions such as, what is your father do? are you married? Do you have a girlfriend? Todd feels uncomfortable and unwilling to respond those personal questions, while the woman just tries to know more about him. As a high context culture, people in India are interesting to build a new and close relationships with others. (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015) They have no issues to ask people confidential information, with no specific reason why they asking it is just one of their culture’s nature, Indian people are vulnerable to communicate. (Rutledge, 2011) People in the USA dose not like to share their personal life information with others, they prefer to keep it confidential and they tend to be insular. (Rutledge, 2011) the short term relationship, where they believe that no need to build deep relationships during do some business. (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015) 13:40 – 14:14

USA: LOW INDIA: HIGH #scene2 22:40 – 23:26 In this scene, Todd were teaching the pronunciation to the Indian workers, he is telling them how to talk as an American person and he asked them if anyone call them to buy a product, they just tell the caller that they are from Chicago and the weather is windy in order to sell more products. In the low context culture, people are focusing more on the result (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015), they put all there efforts in aims to achieve the best. Here, Todd wants to increase the number of sales by lying to the customers callers. In high context culture, people concentrates in the way of the process, they consider it as an important than the product itself. (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015) Here, Aisha considered this act as dishonest and she will not lie to the customers as her boss “Todd” said . 22:40 – 23:26

USA: LOW INDIA: HIGH #scene3 45:42 – 46:31 In this scene, Todd is talking to his colleague “Puro’’ about how much he missed his mother and family, while his colleague were shocked when Todd told him that he live alone, without his family and he just see them few times in a year! Puro’s reaction was natural because in India’s culture, which is high context culture, people have strong feelings, sense, and relations with their families (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015), they are living together even if they get married and become big family and that’s because of their prevailing tradition of family responsibility. in the USA, people are considered low context cultures, they believe in Individual freedom and privacy (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015). The independence is highly valued (Kelly, 2013), while they think that living with their family above 18 years make them less responsible to their own life's, that's why Todd prefer to live alone. 45:42 – 46:31

USA: LOW INDIA: HIGH #scene4 51:02 – 53:00 In this scene, the India's workers were enjoying and sharing their work with each other, they showing how they improves in their job, which illustrate the importance of the team work and how people are collectivist in achieving the company’s goals. in India, people prefer the team work, they believe that by corporate, share and contribute they will arrive their goals in easy and fast way. (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015) India is a collectivist society; they feel they belong to in group, India’s collectivism score is 52. (the hofstede center , n.d.) As the movie’s show the strong relationship between the employees which consider as the key to everything in a Collectivist society or culture. The USA is a individualism society, they are just thinking about their personal goals, the USA’s IDV score is 91 (the hofstede center , n.d.). Todd was focusing on result and on his individual responsibility for his work to finish in short time so that he can go back to his home. (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015) 51:02 – 53:00

USA: LOW INDIA: HIGH #scene5 1:09:33 – 1:10:37 Todd was walking outside with Aisha while she just tried to be formal in her behavior to him, when he asked her about the reasons, she said that’s because of other people’s thinking about her and because she is engaged to be married, this reason surprised Todd. Todd and as his low context culture, dose believe that any person should be Individual responsibility in get married and choose the persons who want to marry by him/herself . In US, the groom or wife are not required to be from the family members , people are more comfortable with Intercultural marriage. (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015) In India, women are being engaged to one of their family’s member from early age. In high context culture, people rarely marry with outsiders (Trinder, Intercultural Studies, 8 September 2015), that’s why Aisha was sure when she told Todd about her future husband who chosen by her parents . 1:09:33 – 1:10:37
