ALSDE Updates @mjshields

A New Vision For Alabama Education In the knowledge-based economy of the future, a dynamic, healthy and prosperous Alabama will increasingly rely on the education of its population. The first step to realizing that vision is a high-performing system of public schools that challenges all children with world-class expectations for understanding English and its rich literature, mathematics, history and the requirements of a democracy, the sciences and the arts. Such a system demands educators with a deep understanding of the subject being taught, a personal allegiance to continuous self-improvement and a commitment to helping all children find their success in school, careers and their lives thereafter. It is through promoting and supporting such a vision for each child’s education that Alabama can create a system of public education that is equitable, accountable, and just.

The Goals For The Strategic Plan That will Make Such an Education System possible A Prepared Graduate Multiple Pathways to Higher Education and Careers Superior Educator Preparation Continuous Improvement of World-Class Educators Equitable and Accountable Systems Healthy and Safe Systems and Schools Engaged Families and Communities

2018 STATE ASSESSMENTS Scantron (Global Scholar) – Grades 3-8 Mr. Sentence has proposed using ACT (11th Grade) for the required high school federal accountability, as well as the PSAT. Request for Bid for new assessment is expected to be posted in August. @mjshields

@mjshields

National Board Certification Alabama is 12th in the country for % of NBCTs!! Grant will be made available soon for NEW candidates. Jackson County Schools 22 NBCTs 10 Teachers have created NBCT accounts, and 4 of those have started the process (EA Math, AYA English, Generalist, & Literacy). Contact me for more info. Resources and info on my website: http://getitpd.wikispaces.com @mjshields

NBCT Research (2017) Students taught by Board-certified teachers learn more than students taught by other teachers. Estimates of the increase in learning are on the order of an additional one to two months of instruction. The positive impact of having a Board-certified teacher (NBCT) is even greater for minority and low-income students. @mjshields

All cases in the library have scored a 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. ATLAS cases show NBCTs at work in their classrooms and are submitted as part of certification. All materials submitted by the teacher undergo a valid, reliable review process. All cases in the library have scored a 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. These cases, authentic and unedited, form the basis of ATLAS. Each case includes: A video of NBCTs engaging their students in active learning. A commentary written by the NBCT including the instructional context and background of the students; planning and instruction decisions; analysis of the video; and reflection on teaching effectiveness and student learning. Instructional materials relating to the case (e.g. student work samples, classroom layout, etc.).
