Prime and Composite Factors: – When 2 or more numbers are multiplied, each number is called a factor of the product Ex) 1 x 5 = 52 x 5 = 10 1 x 10 = 10.

You are by a well and you need exactly 4 gallons of water, but you only have 2 buckets. One is bucket measures 5 gallons, while the other measures 7. How do you measure out 4 gallons exactly? Fill 7 dump into 5, dump 5. Fill 5 with 2 gallons. Refill 7, fill 5 gallon to top, 4 is left!

Prime and Composite Numbers!

Definition Factors: A integer that divides evenly into a larger number. Example: Factors of 12 { 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12} Example: Factors of 21 { 1, 3, 7, 21}

What is a Prime Number?

7 & 11 Definition Prime Number A number that has only two factors, itself and 1. 7 & 11 EX: 7 is prime because the only numbers that will divide into it evenly are 1 and 7. 11 is prime because the only numbers that will divide into it evenly are 1 and 11

What is a Composite Number?

Definition The factors of 8 are: 1, 2, 4, 8 The factors of 9 are: Composite number: A number that has more than two factors. The factors of 8 are: 1, 2, 4, 8 The factors of 9 are: 1, 3, 9

Examples of Composite Numbers 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15 Special Note: Every even number from 2 on is either composite or prime.

Zero is neither prime or Special Case It is not prime because it does not have exactly two different factors. It is not composite because it does not have more than 2 factors. In a nut shell: Zero is neither prime or composite.

Special Case One is neither prime or composite . It is not prime because it does not have exactly two different factors. It is not composite because it does not have more than 2 factors. In a nut shell: One is neither prime or composite .

Special Case Two is prime but not composite. It is prime because it does have exactly two different factors. It is not composite because it does not have more than 2 factors. In a nut shell: Two is prime but not composite.

What numbers are prime? Let’s look at a number grid from 1 to 100 and see how they were discovered. Lets try it on our own!
