Welcome to Keele! Choosing your modules August-September 2017 School of Humanities (American Studies, English, Film, History, MCC, Music, and Music Tech)

Choosing electives Module selection starts in August for new students, and you’ll get information telling you how to do that online. Before then, you can use this powerpoint to plan your selection and even to start preparing over the summer if want to.

What can I choose? On the electives homepage (http://www.keele.ac.uk/electives/) click on ‘Look what you can choose…’

For 1st Year students, click ‘Level 4 electives’ and select your degree. Let’s use Dual Honours English and History as an example.

What do I have to do? The ‘Compulsory Core’ tab shows the modules you will automatically do, along with everyone else on your course. In this case, there are 3 modules (out of your total 8).

What can I choose to do? (1) Next, look at the ‘Optional Core’ tab. It shows a list from which you choose a certain number. Each module is 15 credits, so in this example, there is one to choose here. Don’t worry, you can still do others listed!

What can I choose to do? (2) Finally, use the ‘Electives’ tab to see what else you can do. In our example, it says there are 60 further credits needed, i.e. 4 modules.

What can I choose to do? (3) There are ‘programme approved’ electives and ‘free-standing electives’. The first kind are those either offered by your own programme(s) – in this case, English and History – or which count as credits to the English and/or History elements of your degree (such as American literature and American history offered by American Studies) The second are offered by other programmes (e.g. Chemistry), so you can take up something new or continue a subject you enjoyed at school or college.

There are enough choices in the ‘programme approved’ list for you to keep just to your subjects if you prefer.

And there are lots of other things to choose from – on the left you can see options from Computing to Chemistry, from Education Studies to Environmental Science. On the right, you can see Modern language options.

Modern languages You can choose to improve an existing modern foreign language, or start a new one. Advice on selecting the right level is available: https://www.keele.ac.uk/lc/modernlanguages/

Ok, so that gives you an idea of how it’s all structured, but to find out more about these modules, you can click on the module code from any list, or use the Module Catalogue: https://www.keele.ac.uk/recordsandexams/az/modulecatalogue2017-18/

Select your subject(s), the your level (4 = year 1) and your route (dual, single, major, minor).

and then click ‘Further details’ to read more about each module

For each module, you can see the name of the module convenor and their contact details, the description, and how it is taught and assessed. You can even get going on core reading if it is specified.

Remember… You’re very welcome to contact the staff member who is the module convenor. When you arrive at Keele in late September, you can change optional modules (assuming there is space). You will take 120 credits each year. Most modules are 15 credits, so that is 8 modules a year, or 4 in each semester All information is correct to the best of our knowledge but inevitably some things may change, especially where things are described as ‘indicative’. You’ll get a personal timetable ahead of when you arrive in September.
