Hotel Intercontinental, Toronto Program Overview for Summer Institute Hotel Intercontinental, Toronto August 29, 2016

School College Work Initiative Began 1997 Designed to build and sustain better linkages between the college system and the secondary school system to support expanded and improved transitions by secondary students to college

SCWI Activities/Forums Last year 16 RPTs received approval for 109 activities and regional forums. Over 38,000 students, teachers, college faculty and administrators participated.

School College Work Initiative Led by Directors of Education and College Presidents Goal: to support expanded and improved transitions by secondary students to college Represents 24 colleges and 70 eligible school boards Began with wide variety of activities and forums Expanded to include DUAL CREDITS in 2005-06

SCWI Organization 16 Regional Planning Teams Chair Board Reps College Reps Ministry of Education and Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities Council of Ontario Directors of Education Administers SCWI, convenes meetings of CMT, provides reports to EDU/TCU, as per contract with CODE Project Officer and Liaison Team School-College-Work Initiative Co-Management Team Comprised of: Directors of Education College Presidents EDU Representatives TCU Representatives

Dual Credit Programs 2005-6: 361 students, 36 school boards in pilot projects at 14 colleges Comprised of college-level courses in which carefully selected secondary school students may be enrolled Basically courses count as both secondary and college credits Students who meet the college-level standards in these courses granted OSSD credits as well as college credits Eligible students may take up to 4 non-compulsory OSSD credits Dual Credit Programs - Policy and Program Requirements, 2013 Ontario Ministry of Education Could you refer to the new Policy and Program Requirement guide at this point – audience will have a copy

Growth in Dual Credit Programs 2005-06 2012-13 2013-14 2014-15 2015-16 2016-17 14 pilot projects 450 programs 486 544 Approx. 500 361 students 18,584 19,151 19,958 Approvals for 22,400 Approvals for 22,443 Hi David, Did you want to skip 2007-08 and 2008-09?

Dual Credit Student Data Report 2013-14 David, the 2014-15 Dual Credit Student data report is not yet available – hasn’t been written yet since Michael only recently got the OnSIS data. I’ve added a screen shot of the 2013-14 Report and changed the title of the slide. Source: Ontario Ministry of Education, 2014

Dual Credit Student Participation Student participation increased by 4% over 2013-14 (19,151students to 19,958 students) Number of programs increased by 12% In 2014-15, approved vs actual student participants remained stable at 92%

Retention Rates Sandra – steady improvement

Success Rates Sandra Notable improvement particularly given the increased number of students.

Target Group Participation by Program Focus 19,958 dual credit students provincially 16,899 in the primary target group (85%) 1,769 SHSM students (9%) 1,290 OYAP students (6%) New for 2012-13, RPTs were asked to identify the main target group by program. This slide shows the relative proportion of programs by main target group. Important that the 3/4 of the programs are for the primary target audience.

Provincial Dual Credit Footprint 2013-14 Dual Credits Students Grade 11 and 12 Students 13,707 = 3.5% Sandra [5.3% in 2011-12] [Our target is about 7.5%; Would mean 29,000 students] This footprint is based on the number of dual credit students as reported by the RPTs divided by the provincial number of grade 11 and 12 students. We want boards and RPTs to be able to calculate their individual footprint. For the first time with the 2012-13 approvals, as part of the approvals process, one of the criteria was the saturation by board for new program approvals or expansion of existing programs. In areas where there was a high percentage of dual credits/grade 11 and 12 students, we were less likely to approve expansion or to approve new programs in order to have funds for “underserved” areas. We do want to reach all schools. If there are schools where students in the primary target group do not have dual credit opportunities, RPTs should consider ways to involve these schools. 367,096* * 2013-14 grade 11 and grade 12 enrolment (source: OnSIS)

Students who earned their OSSD 2014-15 OnSIS data* Grad rate continues to improve The focus of dual credits continues to be on helping students to earn their OSSD Students who earned their diploma by the end of the school year they took their dual credit. We know that some students take their dual credit in Grade 11 and some may need 5 years to complete their OSSD.

Transitions to Post-Secondary Education After one year, students who took a dual credit in 2013-14: 4,377 applied for college (31%) 2,721 registered for college (19%) 62% conversion rate (students who applied and registered|) RPTs have data over a few years, and also college-specific data on applicants and registrants. Numbers of dual credit students applying to and registering at university continue to be low (applicants: 3%, registrants: 1%). The conversion rate seems to have gone down in 2014-15; Ministry staff are looking at this.

School Within a College (SWAC) Carefully selected students Classroom space provided by college OSSD courses taught by secondary teacher Dual credit course(s) done as well
