Bellwork 5-1 Answers She and I are going to go shopping for a collie puppy and a yo-yo. Her needs to be she because the sentence needs a subject pronoun. Me needs to be I because the sentence needs a subject pronoun. Gonna needs to be going to Shopping has two ps. Collie does not need to be capitalized.

Bellwork 5-2 Iris ate icecream on the ice berg while the yak yakked about frozen Yogurt. (There are 3 errors.) Learning Goal: I can find the grammatical errors in the above statement. Directions: Write the statement above correcting all errors.

Bellwork 5-2 Answers Iris ate ice cream on the iceberg while the yak yakked about frozen yogurt. Ice cream is two words. Iceberg is one word. There is not need to capitalize yogurt.

Bellwork 5-3 The scared moose vamoosed, disappearing behind the caboose. The word is spelled scared. Disappearing has two “ps” Disappearing behind the caboose is an element that interrupts the sentence so it needs a comma.

Bellwork 5-4 He held out his hands to catch the football, then he glanced at Kiyoko to see if she was chearing for him, when he turned back, the football hit him right in the face. (There are 6 errors.) Sentence can be corrected in a couple of ways. Learning Goal: I can find the grammatical errors in the above statement. Directions: Write the statement above correcting all errors.

Bellwork 5-4 Answers He held out his hands to catch the football and then glanced at Kiyoko to see if she was cheering for him. When he turned back, the football hit him right in the face. Cheering is the correct spelling. Need to fix the run-on sentence

Bellwork 5-5 Fern felt kinda funny after the all-you-can-eat octopus buffet the one held every friday night at Fish R Us. (There are 3 errors.) Learning Goal: I can find the grammatical errors in the above statement. Directions: Write the statement above correcting all errors.

Bellwork 5-5 Answers Fern felt kind of funny after the all-you-can-eat octopus buffet, the one held every Friday night at Fish R Us. Kinda may be okay for very informal e-mails between friends. In other cases, it should be spelled kind of. The sentence ends with an appositive, “the one held every Friday night at Fish R Us.” It interrupts the sentence to give us more information. It should be preceded by a comma. Days of the week are capitalized.

Bellwork 5-6 Mr. washburns old car wouldn’t be able to win a race against a Cheetah, which can run as fast as 70 miles per hour. Niether would Mr. washburn. (There are 6 errors.) Learning Goal: I can find the grammatical errors in the above statement. Directions: Write the statement above correcting all errors.

Bellwork 5-6 Answers Mr. Washburn’s old car wouldn’t be able to win a race against a cheetah, which can run as fast as 70 miles per hour. Neither would Mr. Washburn. Washburn’s must be capitalized because it is a name It must also have an apostrophe. The apostrophe in wouldn’t is in the wrong place. “cheetah” does not need to be capitalized since it is not the name of a specific cheetah. Neither is spelled incorrectly.

Bellwork 5-7 I was like too tired to like wash the dishes and vacume and like do the rest of the chores my mom told me should like me to do, so I went to the mall and like walked around and stuff with my friends. (There are 6 errors.) Learning Goal: I can find the grammatical errors in the above statement. Directions: Write the statement above correcting all errors.

Bellwork 5-7 Answers I was too tired to wash the dishes and vacuum and do the rest of the chores my mom told me she would like me to do, so I went to the mall and walked around and talked with my friends. The only “like” necessary in the item above is the one in “she would like me to do.” The others are just fillers common in informal speech. “vacuum surprises many with its two u’s” There is not e at the end. What does “and stuff” mean? A person should write what he or she means by “and stuff.”

Bellwork 5-8 Jeremy kinda sorta liked playing football, baking cheesecake, ect. (There are 3 errors.) Learning Goal: I can find the grammatical errors in the above statement. Directions: Write the statement above correcting all errors.

Bellwork 5-8 Answers Jeremy kind of liked playing football and baking cheesecake. Kinda and sorta stand for kind of and sort of. One of them should be used here but not both. Etc. stands for and so forth and is used hen the reader can guess what the “and so forth” might stand for. It generally follows a list of at least three items so that a person can determine a pattern. What can the etc. stand for after playing football, baking cheesecake? It needs to be removed and the word “and” added. Take out the comma and add a period after cheesecake.

Bellwork 5-9 Even a busted click, is right twice a day. (There are 2 errors.) Learning Goal: I can find the grammatical errors in the above statement. Directions: Write the statement above correcting all errors.

Bellwork 5-9 Answers Even a broken clock is right twice a day. Broken is the word to use. Only use busted in very informal conversations. There is no need to place a comma between the subject and verb of a sentence.

Bellwork 5-10 Only one mammal can fly with out the help of technology, the bat. (There are 3 errors.) Learning Goal: I can find the grammatical errors in the above statement. Directions: Write the statement above correcting all errors.

Bellwork 5-10 Answers Only one mammal can fly without the help of technology: the bat. Mammal is spelled with an “a”. Without is one word A colon is needed after technology to make the statement bolder.
