Formalism New Criticism Structuralism Only the text needed

How this is different Each of our other types of criticism have required outside research. The people who developed this type of criticism believed those other texts were unnecessary, and you had to go deeper in the thing you were analyzing.

What you do You might apply literary terms to the text. For instance, you might look at how a simple poem in fact reaches all the points of a plot. What are the 5 points of a plot?

Let’s Try it! Find the 1. Exposition 2. Rising Action 3. Climax Falling Action Resolution

Messy Room by Shel Silverstein Whosever room this is should be ashamed! His underwear is hanging on the lamp. His raincoat is there in the overstuffed chair, And the chair is becoming quite mucky and damp. His workbook is wedged in the window, His sweater's been thrown on the floor. His scarf and one ski are beneath the TV, And his pants have been carelessly hung on the door. His books are all jammed in the closet, His vest has been left in the hall. A lizard named Ed is asleep in his bed, And his smelly old sock has been stuck to the wall. Donald or Robert or Willie or-- Huh? You say it's mine? Oh, dear, I knew it looked familiar!

Other Examples of Formalism Identify a repeated image. Find all the instances of it, and decide what it does for the structure and meaning of the work. Analyze the reason a novel’s chapters change point of view and what that does to plot progression.

Or consider any of these other literary terms and create a thesis! Structure Stanzas Rhyme Dialogue Chapter length Organization AND ALL THE OTHERS YOUR TEACHERS TRIED TO MAKE YOU REMEMBER! Plot Theme Symbolism Imagery Character Point of view irony
