HOW TO OVERCOME INDIA’S ELECTRICTY PROBLEM BY PAVNEET SINGH MEng. Electrical Power Engineering Strathclyde University, Scotland.

How to Overcome Present Power Shortage Short term Solution. Switch – off Street lights in summer when peak load during night hours. Better is provide Electricity to Homes rather than Streets. Long Term Solution Replace present Street lights with LED light. LED consume less power as compare to Sodium/Halogen bulbs. LED Lights easily run with solar energy system during summers.

LED VS Sodium Bulbs

Focus on Long Term Solution Problem with Indian System We seek Short term Solutions rather than Long term. Think What will we do If we don’t have enough Coal / Gas to generate power after 15-20 years or Coal/ Gas will be to costly to Generate per unit of Electricity. Advancement We must pay more intention of Renewable Sources like Wind Power & Solar Power.

WHERE WE ARE………. REST OF WORLD More depend upon Renewable sources and Nuclear and Less on Thermal. Use latest technology like SMART GRIDS for better generation / utilization of power in more efficient way. Use Load / Power Management system to make power system more reliable. INDIA We still more depend upon Thermal and less on Renewable/Nuclear. Our Present Grid system is 40-50 old. I think only Gujarat is only state in India having smart grid system. Lack of Load / Power Management system which results wastage of power.

Benefit of Smart Grids Make our power system more reliable & economic. Two way Communication helps Transmit & Receive Power from Homes to Grids or vice versa. In smart grids we use Smart meters which tell customer to consume power at what price at what time.

SMART GRID

INDIA’S FUTURE POWER GENERATION WIND POWER Set up more Offshore wind farms. We have large offshore sea range. Free & clean power for next 2-3 decades. SOLAR POWER Set up large solar farm as we consume more Power during Summers. Government should Provide free or low cost solar system to people.

PRIVATIZATION Privatization of Electricity Providers (Like Telecom Providers). Must be controlled by Government Body. BENEFIT OF PRIVATIZATION Competition in Electricity Market. Consumer have choice to choose their electricity provider which provide better service.

HOW WE SAVE POWER Use Pre-Paid Electricity Meters in Homes. Government provide LED lights at low cost to people. Use of Smart Lights (Motion Sensors). Make our power system network more Reliable. To stop Power theft. More depend upon Natural Source (SUN). MOST IMPORTANT EVERY INDIAN MUST BE HONEST.
