Introduction Welcome everyone to the IAPWS Canadian National Committee workshop. Thank you to the Canadian National Committee for arranging this biennial event. The CANDU Owner Group is pleased to continue its role as the ‘adhering organizing’ for the Canadian involvement in IAPWS…..COG involvement started in 2002.

Canadian National Committee Introduction Canadian National Committee Dave Guzonas AECL Chair Peter Tremaine University of Guelph Past Chair Derek Lister New Brunswick Secretary Ian Hey COG COG Member

Introduction The Workshop agenda was developed by the Canadian National Committee. Workshop Objective To facilitate the exchange of technical information and research information on International Association of the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) matters, and to identify collaborative projects and possible funding.    Workshop Content A review of industry R&D needs and a summary of R&D projects and capabilities at Canadian universities and industry labs.

Some thoughts to stimulate your thinking / discussion We are at the point in CANDU reactor life cycle where the first cycle of operations is coming to a close safely For plants undergoing or planning refurbishment, an understanding of water chemistry and its impact on potential material degradation mechanisms is an important consideration for life extension For new advanced designs, improved understanding of the properties of water at higher temperatures, including the supercritical state, is required

Value from the Workshop Stay current Challenge thinking and programming Educate the next generation of minds as we hand over the knowledge we have gained to those who will deal with the next generation of water chemistry issues Renew acquaintances and make new contacts
