Types of Vegetarians Lacto-ovo vegetarians do not eat red meat, fish, or poultry, but they do eat eggs and dairy products; Lacto-vegetarians consume dairy, but not eggs or any meat products Vegans consume no meat, eggs or dairy, and eat only plant-based products. Semi/Demi-vegetarians: Eat fish and/or chicken but no red meat.

Requirements Because vegetarian diets rely mostly on plant-based products, they are often low in cholesterol and high in fibre It also requires careful planning in order to ensure that vegetarians are getting all of the necessary vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. Vegans have to be particularly cautious and make sure that they get enough calcium and vitamin B-12.

Staple Foods The staples of the vegetarian diet are fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, seeds and nuts. Most vegetarians eat dairy products and free-range eggs.

Healthier Lifestyle? Switching to a vegetarian diet can help to lower cholesterol. Without lean protein like fish and skinless chicken breast, many vegetarians find themselves consuming cheese, nuts, and other high-fat foods. While nuts and cheese can be an important component of a healthy diet, if eaten in excess they can cause weight gain.

Positves Vs Negatives Positives • Can be low in cholesterol and high in fibre • Lots of options Negatives • Some may find it challenging to find a convenient substitute for lean protein • Requires careful planning to get all essential nutrients

Balance Try A Little Vegetarianism: Abandon the idea that you have to eat meat every day and try a couple of meat-free days each week. You don't have to be a vegetarian to enjoy vegetarian dishes.
