Anatomy of a Game Game Attributes Game Elements Game attributes are defined as features and characteristics inherent in the game structure and are likely to initiate and maintain interest in gaming activities (Hull, Williams, & Griffiths, 2013). Action language, assessment, conflict/challenge, control, environment, game fiction, human interaction, immersion, rules/goals Game elements can be defined as a set of tools shared by games, but not necessarily critical conditions of games (Deterding, Dixon, Khaled, & Nacke, 2011). Case Study – Online College Course Working Paper: Nadolny, Fox, Nation 2016
Case Study – Online Course Four Section – 2 low GBL (game attributes), 2 high GBL (game attributes and game elements) No difference in time spent in similar courses (half semester vs. full semester) Survey results were similar Significant differences in “clicks” in low vs. high GBL course

Leaderboards Collaboration when used with groups Healthy competition Concrete goal setting Feelings of achievement Motivating Can be very upsetting to students who are always at the bottom or middle. Negatively impact achievement and beliefs on self and learning. Emoji Icons: GNU License http://www.iconarchive.com/show/oxygen-icons-by-oxygen-icons.org/Emotes-face-smile-big-icon.html
Leaderboards Start the leaderboard over for each unit Change up the goals each month or unit: points, attendance, bonus items (Alaswad & Nadolny, 2015) Have leaderboards be obtainable for all by focusing on skills achieved rather than points (Seaborn, Pennefather, & Fels, 2013) Use team instead of individuals Use pseudonyms instead of real names Try optional leaderboards for those who are interested. Provide incentives for all who participate. Think carefully about rewards and incentives. For example, pizza party for the top 5 students, or a pizza party for all when total points reach certain rules are met (everyone has at least 10 points and the top 5 people total 100 points) Seaborn, K., Pennefather, P., & Fels, D.
