In the old age black was not counted fair, Or if it were, it bore not beauty's name; But now is black, beauty's successive heir, And beauty slandered with a bastard shame: If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right sideup again! The fortune queen of New Orleans, Was brushing her cat in her black limousine On the backseat were scratches from The marks of men her fortune she had won

Sylvia Plat Rings: http://www.5xj.com/goodell35.html My inspiration for the collage came from the final lines in Sylvia Plath’s “Lady lazarus.” Most of the images of women we have focused on in class are of things like flowers, white, purity—I wanted to stray from this and explore the darker side on femininity. As I explored I noticed a trend in portraying strong women as villains. For example, in most Disney movies, the villain is a powerful female. She is often presented as beautiful, but with an ugly side. Through this I also noticed that this type of Dark Lady has become eroticized in today’s culture. Strong, mysterious, and dominating has become sexualized. Overall, I wanted to raise the question of the positive and negative effects these portrayals of powerful women have on our overall perception of women today.
