Ch. 11.4 pgs. 285-289 Using Water Wisely January 26, 2016 IN: With your group, discuss the different pictures you took. Write down each of yours on a sticky note.

Terms to Learn & Objectives point-source pollution nonpoint-source pollution sewage treatment plant septic tank Describe the ways in which we use water. Describe the stages of treatment for water at a sewage treatment plant. Discuss various strategies to increase water sustainability.

Where Does it Go? Where would you say, based on our activity, that most of the water is used?

Where Does it Go? Sewage treatment plants are factories that clean the waste materials out of water that comes from the sewer or drains. Primary Treatment removes solid material such as paper and plastic or oil on top. Secondary Treatment aerates the water and it is treated with bacteria and chlorine. Clark County Water Reclamation District reclaims 90 million gallons of water each year for credit.

Where Does it Go? Point-source Pollution: comes from one particular point, such as a sewer pipe. Nonpoint-source pollution: comes from runoff from general sources.

What’s goin’on? Due to population increases and climate changes, Lake Mead is shrinking. At 1050’ we will lose intake valve #1.

The Southern Nevada Water Authority Patricia Mulroy once led the SNWA and began the battle for water in Southern Nevada. She recently retired, John Entsminger now leads the way.

The Plan SNWA has plans to build a pipeline to Las Vegas from the aquifer in White Pine county. Water Grab

The Plan The “Third Straw” was opened in September, 2015 drawing water from the bottom of Lake Mead.

The Plan Conservation, including watering restrictions for landscapes Water Smart campaign to increase public awareness. Landscape rebates offering $2.00/sq ft. of sod that is removed.
