LA 4 – AP English LIt Class Rules: Areas of Study 40% 20% Ms. Julie Walker Welcome to Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition. This is a college level course, and we’ll be working on reading, thinking and discussing literature and improving your writing to better communicate your ideas. I’ve taught English for 33 years at VHS, and for 38 years overall. I enjoy teaching this class, because as we discuss your ideas, I always learn something new. My colleague, Mrs. Corinna Harnett, also teaches AP Eng Lit 2 periods. Areas of Study Poetry, Shakespeare,19th, 20th, & 21st century novels. Go to http://amzn.com/sl/1GWYFFHJ9JGOF for the specific book list Participation, AP MC Practice Exams & misc. 40% 20% Tests & Quizzes Composition & Writing You will need: Class Rules: Be on Time Be prepared Be polite Be ready to think Be open to new ideas Be willing to take risks Pens –blue/black Highlighters Sticky notes Paper I encourage you to get your own copies of the books we’re reading.

Homework Expectations E-DEVICES I expect you to come to class prepared and to participate in the discussions, even if you are not taking the AP Eng. Lit. exam. I expect that you’ll make-up any missing work soon after you return from a legitimate absence and definitely by the end of the unit. I expect you to to print out assignments. You can email me assignments to prove they were completed on time, but I don’t print them out or grade them until I have a hardcopy. I expect you to be courteous, respectful and clear when you email me. Remember I’m your teacher not your follower on Snapchat. E-DEVICES Please check the sign in class indicating when electronic devices will be permitted for appropriate educational use. At no time will they be allowed for games, phone calls, texting, social media, etc. Homework You’ll be given a calendar for the unit with the assignments. Most of the homework is reading. I know you are very busy, but one of the most important skills you need as an adult is managing your time. Look at the calendar and decide when you have time to do the reading prior to the due date. Also, you need to read carefully – not just skimming over as you might read a People magazine article. This will take more time, as will the annotating you do. Make sure you leave yourself enough time. You’ll also have weekly vocabulary tests you’ll need to study for, as well as writing assignments. There will also be times you’ll be asked to view a lesson on our website /Google Classroom so that in class we can further our practice or discussions.

Appointments & Make up Work The AP Eng Lit exam Given on WED., May 3, 2017 & begins at 8:00 am (be there by 7:15) Cost is approximately $95.00 per exam; there are fee reductions for eligible students. Late test takers may incur other charges. Part 1 is Multiple Choice 1 hour (60 min) Approx. 55 questions from 4 or 5 sections Divided between Poetry & Prose Covers late 1500s through 2000s Part 2 is the Open Questions (essays) 2 hours 3 essays (40 mins. each) Poetry Prose Free Response (thematic question) using a novel/play of “adult literary merit” Appointments & Make up Work Everybody misses a day of school now and then – in fact, it’s better to stay home and not spread the illness if you’re sick . When you return, I hand you a small pink slip letting you know what tests / quizzes / major assignments you missed when you were gone. I’ll have put any handouts you missed in a file box with folders for the dates on the media cabinet in the front of the room. Just check the folders for the dates you were gone. Above the file box, you’ll see a pink clipboard & calendar letting you know the days/times I’m available to make up work that can only be done in class. Sign up and don’t forget to show up!
