Interpreting Systems Graphs

The graph shows the costs of two waterparks. Splish Splash charges $9 The graph shows the costs of two waterparks. Splish Splash charges $9.50 per person but also charges a $75 entrance fee for all groups. Water Wonders charges $12.50 per person with no group entrance fee. How much is it for 10 people at both parks? 30? If the number of students is doubled, does the price also double at both parks? Why or why not? Does one park always offer the better deal? Is the pricing proportional at either park? How many people would it take for the cost to be the same? Is there are point at which one is a better buy than the other?

The graph shows two cell phone plans The graph shows two cell phone plans. Plan A costs $20 each month for unlimited messaging. Plan B costs 10 cents per message sent or received. What does the intersection of the lines represent? Why is Plan A’s line horizontal? What does it mean?

Wendy is starting a catering business and is attempting to figure out who she should be using to transport the food to different locations. She has found two trucking companies that are willing to make sure her food arrives intact. Peter’s Pick Up charges $ 0.40 per mile and charges a flat fee of $68. Helen’s Haulers charges $0.65 per mile and charges a flat fee of $23. For what distance would the cost of transporting the produce be the same for both companies? If she was traveling 10 miles a day for 15 days, which company should Wendy choose?

A teacher is purchasing binders for her classes A teacher is purchasing binders for her classes. The graph shows the total cost of ordering x binders from two different companies. For what numbers of binders are the costs the same at the two companies? If a teacher has 120 students, which is a better purchase?

You and a friend are going hiking but start at different locations You and a friend are going hiking but start at different locations. You start at the trailhead and walk 5 miles per hour. Your friend starts 3 miles from the trailhead and walks 3 miles per hour. Your friend says that after an hour of hiking you will both be at the same location on the trail. Is your friend correct? When will you meet up?
