1. Scientific Method Students want to test if guinea pigs grow larger if kept in warmer cages. They decided to measure the temperature of the cages in Celsius and the size of the guinea pigs in grams. During the experiment, they fed the guinea pigs the same type and amount of food each day, housed the pigs in the same types of cages with the same type of exercise equipment and shelter, and gave the pigs the same amount of water. The students measured the size of the guinea pigs each day in the evening for thirty days. a. What is the Independent Variable? Temperature of cages b. What is the Dependent Variable? Size of guinea Pigs

2. What are 5 constants the students controlled during the experiment? (There are more than 5 if your imagination is working hard!)

3. Write a hypothesis for this experiment. (IfGuinea pigs are kept in warmer cages… then the pigs will grow larger… because…the warmer temperatures will cause to pigs to be more healthy )

4. Interpreting Data Some business savvy kids set up a lemonade stand on their corner and tracked their sales according to the temperature outside. The data they collected is shown on the right. What temperature resulted in the best sales? 85 degrees F If the temperature outside were 50 degrees F, predict what how much money they could make in sales? About $150 - $175 Predict how much they could make if the temperature were 78 degrees F. about $450 NOT on Test: See if you can find 1 or more problems with the graph should have line of best fit (not connect the dot), should have a title

5. Interpreting Data Students conducted an experiment to test how the acidity of soil affects plant growth. The students measured the acidity by taking the pH of the soil and they measured the height of the plants in cm. The results they collected are shown on the right. What pH resulted in the tallest plants? 6.6 – 6.8 If the pH rose to 7.4, how tall would you expect those plants to grow? About 17 cm How tall would you expect the plants to grow if the pH were 6.5? About 52 cm

6. Scientific Notation A x 10B Explain how to write a number in scientific notation to your partner (explain the parts of the formula A x 10B). Write the following numbers in scientific notation: 0.0006 = 6 x 10-4 340 = 3.4 x 102 6.7 = 6.7 x 100 0.000045 = 4.5 x 10-5

7. Scientific Notation A x 10B Explain why the following number is NOT in scientific notation: 44.4 x 104 Write the following number in Standard Notation (the long way): 2 x 103 =2000 5.6 x 10-3 = 0.0056 8.001 x 100 = 8.001 4. 91 x 107 = 49,100,000

Convert the following metric measurements: 8. Metric System Before you begin, pretend like your partner has never seen the metric ladder before. Teach them how to use it. Be specific and clear in your instructions. Convert the following metric measurements: 35.7 mL = 0.0357 L 2000 hg = 200,000,000 mg 50 dam = 50000 mm

Convert the following metric measurements: 9. Metric System Before you begin, pretend like your partner has never seen the metric ladder before. Teach them how to use it. Be specific and clear in your instructions. Convert the following metric measurements: 0.03 kilometers = 30 meters 3.401 grams = 340.1 centigrams 88.8 L = 0.0888 kiloliters

10. Measurements Measure the volume of the liquid in the graduated cylinder. 34 mL Measure the length of the arrow. 5.8 cm What metric UNITS would you use to measure something’s mass (g), length(m), and volume (L)? * Don’t forget to estimate to one digit smaller than the smallest division!*

11. Measurements Practical Determine the volume of the rubber stopper. Record all measurements that get you to the answer. Started with 33.2 mL empty , went to 39.5 mL with stopper Stopper = 39.5 – 33.2 = 6.3 mL

12. Measurements Practical Find the mass of the following objects: Eraser 45.2 g Paper clip 0.9g 10 marbles 51.5 g 100 mL of water 97.7 g

13. Measurements Practical Find the Density of water D = m / v Record all measurements that lead you to the answer mass of 100 ml water = 98.97 g D = 98.97 g / 100 mL = 0.9897 g/mL

14.Notebook Check Get your notebook in order Use the table of contents to be sure you have everything Gather any missing papers from file box Rate yourself on the Following from 1-3 (3- I Know it 2 – I kind of know it 1- I have no idea) Metric Conversions Scientific Notation Variable Identification Writing a Hypothesis

15. Vocabulary Independent Variable C Dependent Variable E A. Use of the 5 senses to examine characteristics of something B. Variable that is controlled and remains the same throughout the course of an experiment C. The variable being tested in an experiment. The one you purposefully change. D. A testable explanation that leads to further investigation. E. The variable that is measured in an experiment and changes as a result of changes to the Independent Variable. Independent Variable C Dependent Variable E Observation A Hypothesis D Constants B
