Europe Faces Revolution Why? Growth of Nationalism and disagreement over preferred government
Roots of the Revolutions date back to Congress of Vienna Peace settlement ending Napoleonic Wars Created a balance of power throughout Europe Surrounded France with strong nations without completely humiliating France Restored rightful rulers back to their throne returning power to conservatives (this is why trouble is on the horizon)
Debate over Preferred Government Conservative – wealthy property owners and nobility; preferred protecting the traditional monarchies of Europe Liberals – middle-class business leaders and merchants; give power to elected parliaments, but only the educated and landowners would vote Radicals – lower class; favored drastic change so that democracy would be extended to all people and wanted to practice the ideals of the French Revolution
Growth of Nationalism Nationalism – a sense of pride/loyalty in one’s nation because of a shared culture, language, history, and/or bond; believing that people’s greatest loyalty should be to nation of people and not a king or queen What schools of thought would be more likely to be nationalistic supporters (radicals, conservatives, and/or liberals)?
History of British Government Became a constitutional monarchy with William and Mary Who holds the power? How is it set up? Is this a true democracy? If so, why? If not, why not? Why the fuss?
Industrialization creates a desire for change 5 % had the right to elect members to House of Commons Men owning substantial land could vote so upper class called the shots In response to events in France, parliament passes Reform Bill of 1832 which gives middle class voting priveleges
Reform Bill of 1832 still not good enough Chartist movement develops because still a small percentage of men could vote Chartists want to make Parliament responsive to lower class (How?) The movement is rejected; however, over time, suffrage is granted to most adult males by 1884 Women are still left out in the cold until the end of WWI
France becomes the Third Republic Third Republic was a democracy It was clouded in controversy as political factions fought for power Dreyfus affair created more political division Who was Dreyfus? Led to Zionism (movement to build a homeland in Palestine (Why)
