Just One of the Gang

Children watch Sesame Street on television Children watch Sesame Street on television. In April 2017, the show introduced a new Muppet--Julia. The young girl has a developmental disorder known as autism. Sesame Street is hoping to promote a better understanding of children with autism.

Children with autism have strengths and differences Children with autism have strengths and differences. They are also characterized by challenges with repetitive behaviors, speech, and nonverbal communication. They may become overwhelmed by loud noises.

One of Julia's strengths is that she's great at spotting shapes One of Julia's strengths is that she's great at spotting shapes. During one show, Julia joins her friends to hunt for shapes. She is, after all, just one of the gang.

VOCABULARY Challenge: something that is hard to do
