Measles By: Taylor Swyers

The Disease Measles is a highly contagious respiratory infection caused by a virus. It creates a rash all over your body and gives you a fever, cough, and runny nose.

What layers of skin does measles affect? Epidermis Dermis (if it more serious)

Signs of the Disease 10-14 days after you are infected, the symptoms start to show. Fever Dry cough Runny nose Sore throat Inflamed eyes Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers on a red background found inside the mouth on the inner lining of the cheek A skin rash made up of large, flat blotches that often flow into one another

Cause of the disease The cause of measles is a virus that starts in your nose and throat. When someone who is infected with measles coughs, sneezed, or talks, infected droplets are released in the air

Treatment Once you are infected, there is no prescription medicine to treat measles. You should get the MMR vaccine to prevent getting measles. If you have it, here are some things to relieve your symptoms: Rest Fluids Vitamin A

Worst Case Scenario As many as one out of every 20 children with measles gets pneumonia, the most common cause of death from measles in young children. About one child out of every 1,000 who get measles will develop encephalitis (swelling of the brain) that can lead to convulsions and can leave the child deaf or with intellectual disability For every 1,000 children who get measles, one or two will die from it

Fun Facts Measles cases reached a record high in 2014, and after a 2015 outbreak at Disneyland the numbers keep growing Pregnant women who have measles have a tendency to have a premature birth or a very light weight baby The disease could be prevented world wide if people would vaccinate their children
