What image of white English people does Powell create What image of white English people does Powell create? What words and images does he use to do this? How is the fact that the letter is from an old, white lady significant? How does it evoke an emotional response in the listener? How are the words 'excreta' and 'piccaninnie' used to create an emotional reaction? What is the 'tragic and intractable phenomenon' Powell refers to in the penultimate paragraph of the speech? What impact did Powell intend this reference to have on his audience? Pick out abstract nouns Pick out emotive language Pick out inclusive language Pick out stereotypes

Telephone Conversation Wole Soyinka's poem 'Telephone Conversation' explores the feeling of a black man looking for a room to rent in England. This sort of racist question on the part of the landlady, and the decision to refuse to rent to non-whites, became illegal with the passing of the Race Relations Bill. A three-part oral reading will help students follow the conversation as well as appreciate the details and tone of the non-spoken parts of the poem. 1. How do the capital letters help to establish a tone to the words of the woman on the phone? 2. How does the speaker expand the idea of colour to mock the woman and show his anger? 3. How do we know where the speaker is in the poem? 4. Why does the poet use the word 'pleaded' in the penultimate line? How does this shift the emotional tone of the poem?

How does the language of this extract contribute to the views the speaker expresses? Context Purpose Audience Signpost commentary This is a political speech Oppose Race Relations legislation but also to support anti-immigrant sentiment British public 1960’s In this essay I will focus on…. 7. Rhetoric is the politician’s favourite tool for winning over public admiration and, more importantly, public support. This infamous speech by Enoch Powell. 6. Political speeches are carefully calculated to embrace as wide an audience as possible and persuade people to support the speaker. In this speech we can see.. 5. This extract is a political speech made by a 1960’s Conservative politician to oppose race relations legislation and to create anti-immigrant feeling.

PETAL Point Evidence Technique Analysis Link to cultural context Powell uses emotive language, anecdote, semantic field of war, dramatic imagery Quotations – short embedded Explain desired effects ALSO link to other relevant parts of the text. Link to the cultural context (cultural bias)

Widow anecdote Powell uses the pathetic anecdote of a war widow to generate fear, pity and anger in the British public. Not only is she a vulnerable woman but also a widow who has “lost her husband and both her sons in the war”. This detail suggests that the country owes her a debt of gratitude and that she is isolated in her own home. The language of invasion used to describe “the Negro” (in itself a racist and demeaning term): foe exampl the verbs “taken over”, “abused” and “attacked” heightens her isolation and places the immigrants in a position of unjust power over her. It is ironic that Powell uses the imagery of “excreta pushed through a letterbox” as this is what was happening to many immigrants at the time. Powell is trying to reverse any public sympathy garnered by campaign groups, for example “The Sikh Community” – again presented as one homogenous group who he claims are responsible for “fragmenting” British society. The word fragmentation an irretrievable breakdown of an unspecific “ordinary” “decent” way if life represented by the widow in the anecdote.
