GALILEO Training Overview Russell Palmer Assistant Director, GALILEO Support Services russell.palmer@usg.edu

Training Statistics: Fiscal YTD Total Sessions: 31 Total Attendees: 761 Presented by GALILEO Staff: 9 Presented by Vendors: 22 Live Online: 22 Face-to-Face: 9

Training Statistics: Fiscal YTD Training Session Focus* K12 Public Academic General 11 14 3

Input from GALILEO Survey “I love the amount of sources available, but the interface definitely requires training to use, without someone teaching you how to use GALILEO you might not figure it out by yourself” – Media specialist

Face-to-Face training Stretches our staff, pros and cons Tend to seek opportunities to reach the widest audience Ready, willing & able Best for us to travel to a central location and reach a wide audience Staff Development Days Regional Meetings (RESA groups for K12) Large School System Events

Live Online training Primarily provided by our vendors GALILEO staff conduct sessions when asked or a need is identified Institution specific troubleshooting and help sessions An area where GALILEO staff is minimally capable of expanding what we offer Provides a venue for GALILEO staff to reach a wider audience with a conference presentation

Vendor provided training Pros Cons Willingness and availability (for f2f and online sessions) Builds relationships Detailed focus on a specific vendor’s tool(s)/product knowledge/what’s coming next Recorded for reuse Primarily demonstration/show and tell (exploring this now) Not all vendors have trainers

Recorded training Deliver once, use many times with occasional updates Very flexible We can make multiple formats available (YouTube Channel, etc.) Archived training sessions: http://help.galileo.usg.edu/librarians/training/archived GALILEO Support YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/GALILEOSupport

Training materials All presentations are generally up online within a few days: http://about.galileo.usg.edu/documents Collateral and training materials are available here as well

GALILEO staff provided training Current focus for GALILEO staff: face-to-face training Primary audience: K12 and Public Libraries Address largest audience possible: K12--RESA groups, conferences (GLMA), multi-school meetings Public Libraries--Staff development days

More possibilities for GALILEO staff delivered training Courses we could offer live online quarterly: Statistics training GLRI training/consultation Integration (D2L and other LMS) overview LibGuides basics Using GALILEO Express Links EBSCO Curriculum Builder Suggestions?

More possibilities for GALILEO training related content Add relevant general training scheduled by vendors to our schedule Link to other free or fee based training providers (ALA, LYRASIS, AMIGOS, ACRL, Library Juice Academy, etc.) Seek and add links to vendor based tutorials and recorded sessions Already doing so, but we could crowd source and apply other strategies Seek and add vendor created handouts or guides, including LibGuides Assess needs, create more expansive GALILEO LibGuides http://libguides.galileo.usg.edu/

Video training Currently: 7 “How To” Videos on key topics Production takes a lot of staff time, specialized skills and equipment (Ken’s home studio!) Future videos: Using ebooks on Mobile Devices GALILEO Tech Tips Suggestions?

Broader ideas for change Sessions from members of the GALILEO community Primary resources in GALILEO ( involve NGE, DLG, CRDL staff) Partnerships (GPLS, DOE) Move from demonstrative to substantive, even with vendor based sessions (ask and motivate—EBSCO/lexile levels) Coordinating with ALG to make more sessions available (ALG hosted a session on EBSCO Curriculum Builder late last year)

Assessments and inputs Post class assessment (vendors do this and are willing to share with us generally) Create our own (danger: survey saturation) Broader survey of training needs (Yearly) Inputs: Routine requests for input (GALILEO Listserv) Discuss strategies with similar agencies NCLive, Magnolia, etc.

Other measures to explore Outcomes based assessment Better understanding how training impacts understanding and performance Learning outcomes How often are the recorded sessions used? EBSCO recently reported 171 recorded training views in 2016 This needs to be assessed in greater depth and for all vendor providers (they have the data, it will just take time to review and report)

My questions for you… What types of training do you need or want to see? From vendor partners? From GALILEO Staff? From the community? Ideas? How can we best support the academic librarian through training? All libraries-how can we help with verification and professional development/LEU’s/CEU’s etc.? School libraries-what are the best ways to reach your staff with online training in terms of timing? “After 3” has been our norm, but what else can we do?

Thank you! Questions for me? russell.palmer@usg.edu
