Your mark is not capped by the type of your participation
Presenting What do you think makes a good presentation? Multimedia Systems Presenting What do you think makes a good presentation?
Presenting: Some guidelines 2 minutes per slide Keep bullets brief Use animations only for a purpose Plan Tell them what you are going to say Say it Remind them of what you said Remember that audiences are friendly People want you to present well Make eye contact with individuals Feel the good will!
Presenting at ECS Multimedia 20 minutes total 15 min presenting 5 min questions what’s the story? why is it interesting? talk to your audience PROJECT!
Why Have Posters Sessions? Lightweight way of showing your work at a conference Posters do three things: They attract attention They explain your work when you’re not there They give you something to talk to when you are! Poster sessions are often mixed in with social events Great way to get to know lots of people
Posters A1 in size Can be one large sheet Or many small ones Multimedia Systems Posters A1 in size Can be one large sheet Or many small ones Away from your stand? Include a small photo of yourself Participants can seek you out during the conference
Multimedia Systems Posters Here are some examples What do you think?
Legibility CAPITAL LETTERS SHOULD NOT BE USED IN CONTINUOUS TEXT Layout should have space between paragraphs, not be overcrowded, and avoid fitting text around illustrations Do not have all the text in italic typefaces An active rather than passive voice should be used Syntax rules should be observed and grammar
Appropriateness of Content Clearly defining the purpose and goals of the poster. Key points should be repeated in order to emphasise their importance Makes sure you have the right target group in mind and design/tailor the content to suit. Address the issue that are important/relevant to the target community. Key points should be repeated
Colour In Poster Graphic designers recommend 3 colours to give maximum impact. Remember Colour has cultural meanings. STOP! GO! Colour Blindness: Some people can not discriminate between some colours. People are effected by many different colour combinations
Demos A Demo is like a Poster Multimedia Systems Demos A Demo is like a Poster But with a live demonstration running alongside it You still need a Poster!
Demos: Some guidelines Poster should explain your demo What are the steps? What does it show? What is the point? Demo should take only a few minutes Better to be live What equipment do you need? Video as backup
