Welcome Thank you for volunteering your time to support others who are learning to read. As a Reading Matters volunteer, you will be able to share your love of reading and inspire others too. This will involve supporting and encouraging people who find reading a challenge. You’ll also help them to build confidence. You will make a real difference. Good reading skills gained at school can have a positive impact on your reading partner’s adult life. A challenge If you guessed “here is a snarling lion” you’d be correct. Images and repeated letters can often provide clues. However this can take time to decode. Reading is not just about books and newspapers. It includes all of the written information around us in daily life. How would poor literacy have an impact on your daily life? When you enjoy reading, it’s easy to forget that for some it’s a real challenge. It can feel like every piece of written information is a secret code. Have a look at the code below. Can you figure out what it says? 8 5 18 5 9 19 1 19 14 1 18 12 9 14 7 12 9 15 14 Created the click-to-reveal effect by adding animation triggers to the “I’ve got it” box. Useful blog which explains how to add interactive elements like that into a PowerPoint presentation: http://www.brightcarbon.com/blog/how-to-make-interactive-powerpoint-slides-for-elearning/
What makes e-learning content engaging? @relishlearning

We don’t all find the same things engaging We don’t all find the same things engaging. Really important to be clear who your e-learning is for and what they find engaging. @relishlearning
People like to be challenged but not too much People like to be challenged but not too much. Understanding your audience helps you to pitch it at the right level. @relishlearning
Cheap tricks @relishlearning Spend time doing the analysis and design bits – measure twice, cut once Using 30 day free trials of software like Camtasia (video editing) and Articulate Storyline (rapid development e-learning tool) PowerPoint can do more than most people think – even simple animations. You need to have a poke and figure out how you can get what you want. There is some good, free software out there like Audacity (sound editing) and GIMP (very similar to Photoshop) Cheap tricks @relishlearning
