What is a Resume? Brief summary of your experiences, academic preparation, skills, and accomplishments Introduces you to potential employers and serves as your first impression to the reader Usually reviewed for 30 seconds or less, must make strong impact! A marketing tool designed to create an image and help brand you A tool to land you an interview

10 tips to success If GPA is over a 3.0, put it on there! Should be attractive and appear balanced. Font size should be between 10-12 and adjust the font to fit more information or fill an empty page. Use the same font size and type throughout the content of your document. NAME should be larger Omit the use of “I” and personal pronouns Do not list tasks, use brief phrases beginning with an action verb! Include numbers to emphasize results you have achieved, e.g., led a team of 20 members Steer away from using the words “address” or “phone number.” Employers will know what a phone number and/or address looks like! Tailor your resume for each position Be honest. Employers can verify a high percentage of the information. PROOFREAD! Errors will not be acceptable.

Take Action Use brief phrases that begin with action verbs to describe previous job/volunteer responsibilities, accomplishments, awards, or capabilities Accomplished Managed Organized Operated Prepared Provided Administered Compiled Completed Developed Established Managed Maintained Expanded Resolved

Mission Accomplished Focus on accomplishments, not just duties! Emphasize results you have achieved by including numbers Supervised 10 volunteers Developed and managed campus club budget of $50,000 Authored 3 health and safety manuals led a team of 20 members Completed a 15 week team project; researched and presented ways to improve campus parking Helpful Tip: Be Honest on your resume when describing duties and accomplishments! Honest information on your resume is a clear indication of your integrity, and employers can verify a high percentage of the information

E-Applying Submit your resume in whichever method the employer requests (e- mail, pasted on web, uploaded into a web form, etc) Formatting is often lost in translation, so be sure to have an electronic resume that is all left aligned and does not use any special formatting conventions. Before sending it to an employer try sending it yourself and others. If you are attaching the resume to an e-mail also paste a copy of your electronic copy into the body of the e-mail. (This will prevent any problems from attachment issues). Follow up to ensure your resume was received. Apply for numerous positions!
