Welcome Thank participants for being there You are here for a deliberation on _____________ The deliberation will consider several approaches to addressing this issue. Each approach will be led by a different moderator (Introduce Moderators) Introduce yourself Introduce subject Explain the organization of the packet

Why are we here? How do we do it? Consider various approaches to the topic at hand Understand what values drive our choices Weigh the costs and benefits/tradeoffs that we must accept in particular courses of action Learn strategic facts and how they affect our consideration of choices Push beyond our initial positions Listen and weigh the views of others Understand how the issue affects different people; particularly those not here who have a stake

Explain the Moderator’s Job Remain neutral Keep deliberation on track/focused Encourage everyone to participate Remind participants that listening to others is critical Ensuring respect is preserved

Explain the Recorders’ Job Write down the thoughts of participants May want clarification Will post all the comments from the deliberation for reflection at the end.

Hand Deliberation over to Approaches

Approaches Moderator – Introduce self and Recorder BRIEFLY direct participants to relevant pages in packet Lead discussion

Reflection Moderating Invite participants to reflect on the conversations Invite discussion with some questions: How has your thinking changed? What do you know now that you didn’t before? Invite participants to identify Common Ground and Tension What more needs to be talked about on this issue? How can we personally use what we learned today?

Reflection Recording Create columns for Common Ground and Tension on sheet; perhaps use different colors to highlight this
