Nil By Mouth Released in 1997, ‘Nil by Mouth’ is a British film surrounding the life of a family of characters living in South East London. It was Gary Oldman's debut as writer, director and it stars Ray Winstone as Raymond, the abusive husband of Valerie (Kathy Burke). The film takes place and was inspired by the environment Oldman witnessed growing up on a council estate in South East London.

Nil By Mouth The family of Raymond, his wife Val and her brother Billy live in working-class London district. Also in their family is Val and Billy's mother Janet and grandmother Kath. Billy is a drug addict and Raymond kicks him out of the house, making him live on his own. Raymond is generally a rough and even violent person, and that leads to problems in the life of the family.

Nil By Mouth The film centres around various themes including drug addiction, alcoholism, domestic abuse and the divide between men and women in the working class. The divide between men and women is obvious from the first scene, in which the main characters sit in a local pub, Valerie, sits with her mother and friends, and Ray, Valerie’s partner, sits with his friends. The film has largely been praised for its realism. The film has a ‘gritty’ look similar to that of the ‘New Wave’ films.

Nil By Mouth The film received numerous awards and nominations from various festivals, as well as BAFTA awards. It did not receive any such recognition from any American institutions.
